Was considering taking a trip to the NE next year and checking out Salem on Halloween. Prob 3-5 day trip .. would be me, Mrs jkyle , and my son who will be 7. Was wanting to stay somewhere near Salem but not actually in the town itself as I’ve seen lodging there is absurd on the week of Halloween. Are there any interesting places close by that would be good to stay. I was giving the Gloucester or Manchester by the sea area a look. Has anyone ever done a Halloween in Salem or stayed anywhere around there that could offer some good suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Salem is an absolute disaster around Halloween. Massive influx of tourists. To the point where the City of Salem has had to come out many times begging people to either come visit Salem another time or not to drive in because there are roughly 10-12k more cars than there are existing parking spots in town.

Salem is a nice little town to spend a few hours, but not in October.

That said, if it’s something yall really want to do, I hope yall have a great time! I just wanted to give fair warning.

My wife and I did a NE trip last October the week before Halloween. While we enjoyed it, we would not add Salem to the trip again (kinda a been there done that type of thing).

Salem itself is a cool town and what they do around Halloween is very unique, but omg it is beyond overcrowded and hectic. My wife and I took advice from locals and got there early (around 8am) to get parking, which was already pretty full even at that time. I would say by 10am you can't find a spot anywhere in the city. Lines for restaurants are insanely long as well. If you insist on doing it (and I dont blame you honestly) I wouldn't make more than a long day out of it, then hit other parts of NE.

Portsmouth, coastal cities in Main, Newport, etc beautiful this time of year and we enjoyed stopping along those the most.

Getting a meal in Salem during Halloween is next to impossible
Literally lines out the door of most places that aren't even that good to begin with

When we went we were traveling to Portland, stayed the night in a Saco Maine. Went in July and traffic in the town of Salem was horrible.

We went in mid september and it was just as halloweenie without the ridiculous crowds. Still semi-crowded.

Friends went to Boston for a work thing last month. Drove out to Salem for a couple days and had a great time. Wasn’t too touristy yet.

Abita hooked me up on a Boston trip a few years ago also. Found myself in a packed LSU alum bar watching LSU whip Georgias arse in the SEC championship. Right beside Fenway park. Good times.

It was a great night. I got there super early and hung out at the bar just me n Jarvis green before it filled up. Sad that place is gone. Must have been a Covid casualty. Hope all is well pal.

It's what I would call a 'check it off the list' place.

A "few hours" is about the most I could imagine wanting to get out of it - ONCE.

It wasn’t due to Covid - they actually sold the land just prior to Covid which was very fortuitous on their part. They sold the land to a major developer and now is a residential high rise.

I don’t blame them one bit for selling as I’m sure they made a fortune, but it was sad to see it go.

Couldn’t have scripted it much better though. Their literal last night before closing was the LSU-OU playoff game. It was one of the most fun nights of my life. The bartenders gave no fricks and were giving away all the booze.
