Doing a couple day stopover in Rome before heading to Rhodes and the Turkey coast. Have been to Rome multiple times as well as the other major key spots there. Have 2 full days to burn and plan to use one to head up to Tuscany as it will be grape harvest. Looking for a place to go the other day that is off the beaten path somewhat? Will still have a full day in Rome so don't need the suggestion to stay there. Dont think I want to head south as we've been there and im sure it will be packed like normal. We like nature, history, food, wine, scenery. Any under the radar spots you have?

One day trip we did out of Rome was to Tivoli. First we went to Hadrian's Villa, then we went to the spectacular Gardens of Villa D'Este.

Ostica Antiqua is a 30 minute train ride from Rome. Nice ruins you can spend a day touring.

Another nice one is a drive to Castelli Romani, the Roman Hills. The two quaint and picturesque hill towns we went to were Frascatti and Castel Gandolfo. Frascatti is famous for their light white wine that the wine taverns serve from right out of the barrel, At one end of the town square in Castel Gandolfo is the summer residence of the Pope.

If I had to pick one day trip, I would go for Villa D'Este. Those fountains are something to see.

Ostia Antica is more of a half-day trip. It's fascinating, because you can see so much of an ancient Roman city (the port city for ancient Rome -- now no longer near the water). It was an ordinary town for working people, not a royal palace or an elaborate temple, so you won't see some of the more powerful or majestic statues or artwork that you can find elsewhere. But there's probably nowhere else that provides such a rich view into what life was really like for ordinary Romans, 2000 years ago.

I think the American cemetery at Nettuno is better than most of Rome. It's beautiful, only some of the WWI cemeteries in France compare. It's about a 45 minute ride, but not a dump like Rome.
