What is the best way to rent a vehicle on a trip and pay what you were actually quoted when you made the reservation? Every time I rent a vehicle expecting to pay a certain price, by the time I leave with the vehicle it seems I always pay more than double that price.

National Emerald Club (free to enroll). Do not add any extras and do not do the pre-paid gas option. Return the tank full. Save all email confirmations.

I have never been charged anything more than what I booked for (minus tolls)

Enterprise, I've had pretty good experiences when calling over the phone instead of dealing with them over online booking. You can usually get a slightly cheaper deal by doing that.

We get a discount through my work with National and I use them almost exclusively. Being able to walk up to any car on Emerald Isle and not have to deal with all the lines at the counter is great.
