Recs on a guided Vatican tour?

Going next spring. I want the best experience within reason. There are some options that let you go in an hour before the general public.

I have no rec to offer on a guided tour through the Museums part of the Vatican, but you should definitely try to get a reservation for the Scavi tour....it's the excavations beneath St Peter's basilica. Fewer than 250 ppl per day are allowed in, with a guide in small groups. You send a reservation request via email & give them the dates/times you are available, and they try to fit you in. It was super cool to be able to beyond the public areas, through a gate guarded by the Swiss Guards in those over the top uniforms.

Christiano Pellegrini
We have used Christiano on multiple trips to Italy. He is unbelievably knowledgeable and his english is perfect. He is a super friendly guy and loves to share his knowledge to those who will listen. He also has the hookups on great places to eat and drink espresso.

We had Katie for 4 days in Rome and it absolutely MADE our trip. She is American, went to Italy on a fullbright scholarship for Art History and fell in love and now has a family in Rome.
Eyes of Rome called themselves “story tellers” and not guides so they really do make the places come to life.
We did the early bird Vatican with them...got in at 7:30. Since it was just us and the guide we were much quicker than the large groups that got in early as well.

Don’t go in the Mosaic Art part of the Vatican. The tour is very limited and amazing. Then they corner you into buying a “piece of church history”. So I bought a piece of history. When I went to an Italian antiques dealer with my 300 year old Vatican mosaic art piece, they literally choked when I told them what I paid.

We went through our travel agent and she got us discounts.
My wife and I went with Katie. Did Catacombs, Vatican, Borghese, In the Footsteps of Julius Caesar, and Coliseum and Forum. It spanned 4 days. We paid about $1400 for the two of us (not per person) for all of those tours which included skip the line passes and timed entry to everything we did.
If you want, I can pass along the information of the agent we used here in the states to book all of that stuff-just let me know.

My family went in June. I would highly recommend getting an single concierge/guide for everything. They’re pricey depending on what they offer, but Italy is so crowded not to in my opinion.

I had a friend recommend a priest from the Legionaries of Christ monastery outside of the Vatican. He was an art history major from Idaho studying to be a priest. He was fantastic. I made a donation to his ministry, although it was not required or expected. He was fantastic and got us in early to the Sistine Chapel and we went down into the catacombs. If you are Catholic or know of any, this is the route to go. At the time (2010) our children were 15, 13 and 11 and they loved him and the tour.

Want to reemphasize the Scavi tour. Did it this morning with my two brothers. It was absolutely incredible. Smaller group and very intimidate; the tour area is a private tunnel network / crypt literally beneath St Peters Basilica. Will add more details later.

We used Dark Rome. Group of 20 with ear buds listening and following our girl thru that mass of humanity. Also did night coliseum tour which was best decision we made entire trip. We had the coliseum to ourselves.

For a guide we used a connection (another priest) of a couple of priests from home.

We used Dark Rome for the Vatican and the Coliseum/Forum.
The Vatican tour was private (2 adults and guide) but just the general tour. I think it was around $500 including tip. The guide was awesome. The Vatican is extremely crowded and the person attention is well worth the price. My sister did the same tour this month on my recommendation and said it was great.
The Coliseum tour was about a dozen people using headsets. Pretty meh.
