Just looking for recommendations for a family trip in the Caribbean. Family of four with two teenagers. Should we stay away from all inclusives and the Dominican islands? If anybody can give ideas how to find reliable local type accommodations that would be appreciated. I would like to do things beyond just sitting on a beach in a sterile resort. Thanks for any help.

Length of trip?
Budget?
Any places you know you don’t want to go to?

Budget is key here.

Go the the Exumas in the Bahamas and rent a house. Absolutely spectacular.

Have you considered a cruise? Your kids would love any of the new Carnival, Royal, or Norwegian ships. And you wouldn’t be sitting on a beach all day.

Rent a vrbo or Airbnb in Redhook Bay on St Thomas.

Ok that’s a lot of room.

In general, Summer can be a good time to travel to the Caribbean because on a lot of islands it’s low season. You lose that advantage on a cruise which has more dynamic pricing.

Personally I think the only US virgin Island worth a visit is St. John and that if you are going to travel that far might as well leave the United States.

Of course plenty of spots in Mexico could work. Or go BVIs. If you can sail or have other boat experience renting a charter boat could be a very great play and wonderful way to make lots of memories.

Or go to St. Martin, St. Barths, Turks and Caicos, Aruba, etc... and price shop some villas with a pool.

Grand Cayman

Beautiful beaches
Not 3rd world, very safe
Family friendly and very laid back
Flight not too long

Plenty of stuff for kids

Snorkeling
Rum Point
Water park
Stingray island
Botanical gardens
Starfish city

We rented a Jeep and drove the whole island and it took 30 minutes. Loved it.

The Moorings is really bad arse. It's in the British Virgin Islands and you can rent a catamaran sail boat or powerboat and get a captain. They do have the option where you drive it yourself with no captai, but wouldn't do that unless you been before. Would be a cool experience for the kids.

What Harambe said. Get a catamaran and sail the BVI. Unbelievable trip.

If you want to be on an island.

St. John. You can still day trip to the BVI.

St. Barths. Beautiful island.

St. Kitts & Nevis. You can stay on St. Kitts in a great VRBO on the south end of the island overlooking Nevis and you can day trip to Nevis.

Roatan. Affordable and great snorkeling and diving. We've stayed Coral Sands 4 a couple of times. 20 ft from the water.

Every time someone asks for recommendations, I always post the same thing...

Small Hope Bay Lodge

Small Hope Bay Lodge is an all inclusive. Yet, it is the furthest thing possible to what "all inclusive" usually means. There are no crowded beaches. There is no casino. Each stand-alone cabin is merely feet from the crystal clear waters.

This will be our 7th year returning to SHB... 3 of my teenagers and I have all become avid scuba divers there. My 19 year old will certify as Dive Master this summer and my 14 yr old daughter will obtain her Advanced open water. I mention this facts as a way to point out the safety of their dive operations and the fact that they can take some "never been scuba diving before" kids and turn them into Avid divers keenly aware of our oceans. Let your kids take the Discover Scuba course there (hell, you should even enjoy it yourself) -- they will thank you many times over the years.

Enjoy empty beaches. Clear water. Fantastic bone, reef, and deep sea fishing.

As for nightlife... There are only 16 cabins and no nightclub. There is an out-door bar that is open to all guests to make your own drinks. I can guarantee you will have other guests serving you drinks, you will make drinks for other guests, and yes, the bar-tenders will also be there to take care of you. The bar is completely open to the guests with no set hours. Each night is filled with laughter, friendship, and cold drinks.

You will make friends with the staff. You will make friends with the guests. It is the friendliest place I've ever been for vacation. It is why we keep going back every year. The first year, we offered our kids 1 week at Small Hope Bay and then 1 week on Nassau at Atlantis. After the 3rd day, they asked us to cancel our stay at Atlantis and extend the stay at SHB.

No, I do not get paid for my endorsements of the place. But yes, we do have an emotional attachment to the place and the people. There are definitely more luxurious places to travel and vacation. Yet every year, we go back to have a truly relaxing vacation.
