I fly semi-regularly for work, but 97% of my flights are to ATL and then a couple hours to my destination.

Mrs. Sheep, Tiny Sheep (almost 5, prayers appreciated) and I leave for Paris on Saturday. These will be my first flights of this duration. (JFK to Paris, 7 hours, overnight and Frankfurt to MSY, 12 hours, afternoon departure)

Any recommendations to minimize the impacts of the long flight? Any recommendations on how to keep the kid from losing her mind?

The overnight flight will be easy, if you and bitty sheep (lamb?) can sleep while flying. I find that watching movies is not conducive to sleep. Noise cancelling headphones, with some soothing relaxation or sleep tracks, may just lull lambie to catch all her zzzzs. If you can get 4 hours on the plane, jet lag will be minimized.

Return is harder. You’ll be tired from vacation fun, bored on the plane, and on local time, so you’ll want to fall asleep. Resist this urge as long as possible. Movies on an iPad, a book, writing in a travel journal (typed or handwritten), edit your vacation pics, etc.

To keep a kid that young occupied, consider buying or bringing simple art supplies (crayons and paper, colored pencils) and have her draw pics of the places she’s visited and make a little book/travel journal of her own.

Sheep, this is the best advice I can give you. It’s gonna be a crap shoot. Kids can do pretty well and get a good nights sleep while the parents could be miserable or vis versa.

Coloring books, as Hungry, mentioned, dollar store toys, something new can help keep them entertained but try to get them sleeping 2 hours into overnight flight. They’ll probably think the meal on the plane is cool and maybe let them watch a show.

On way back let them watch tv til their eyes bleed.

Your more important thing is day one on European soil. Slam some coffee, and hit the ground. Find a playground (they are everywhere in Europe) as soon as you can and let your kid play. Find somewhere to eat lunch, have a glass of wine, then have an afternoon activity. Dinner and then try and get kid to bed for say 830-9 (or whenever). Feel free to sleep in second day it is vacation.

- sleep on the plane
- get up and move around
- don't watch the tv it dries out your eyes
- when you arrive take melatonin to go to bed at a decent hour

Thanks - we are spending the day before in NYC, so we intend to run her into the ground all day on Saturday, so she sleeps on the overnight flight.

We intend to hit the ground running in Paris (landing around noon) until dinner time.

If you can upgrade for any more space, it is worth it. Even premium economy is worth it.

Business class on the way back, but economy on the way there (prayers appreciated).

We are in the bulkhead for the economy flight, so at least not in full gen pop.

Keep everyone hydrated the day you run around NYC. Its helps the next day. Don't drink too much, the worst is being drunk in coach not being able to sleep.

What airline? We did bulkhead from DFW to Dusseldorf economy on American. NEVER again! What you save in leg space, you lose in arse space. American planes have 17" seats normally. You get 15" in the bulkhead area and the tray table is so flimsy that you WILL spill something. I am 6' and was MISERABLE for 10 hours. We spent extra and upgraded for the flight back.

Are you talking about for the kid or yourself? As said, exercise the day of your flight. Wear yourself out. Also, the night before try to go to bed early. The last thing you want is to be going to bed at 11pm or late and then fly to a time zone where the sun rises 4 hours later. So if you can go to bed at 8am or as early as possible for 2-3 days before I find that helps.

Kids are easy on planes, they are smaller and can usually sleep if you wear them out. They can also nap when you arrive.

I would NOT nap as an adult. Get an expresso or 2 on your arrival, then walk a lot the first day of your arrival. Try to get a couple of miles in. Push yourself to stay awake past 8pm Paris time because an 8 hour sleep means 4am wake up.

The first day is rough, so keep that in mind with your planning. Its a great day to simple explore the city, but not necessarily do anything you are overlooking looking to do like the Louve or Eiffel tower.

ETA: Also, I find that Day 2 you almost always wake up early. Or at least I do. So I try to plan doing something early that day as I know I'll be awake. Many times I wake up at 4:30-5am. So if there's somewhere special for breakfast or that I want to do early, I usually try for Day 2.

Norwegian Air. It's a 787-9. Looks like there are 2 or 3 rows in the bulkhead section, so we hope it will be a little quieter. We're small people, so hopefully the legroom/headspace isn't terrible.

A little of both.

This is our plan for when we land. We get in around noon. We'll hit the hotel, drop our stuff off, have a light lunch and then go wander around until dinner time.
