Recommendations for things to do/see in Vietnam

Taking the wife and 3 kids there over the holidays and primarily staying in the area near Hoi An, Da Nang, and Hue.
Curious to hear from anyone who has been to that region... thoughts, recommendations, things not to miss.

The owners of this restaurant do Vietnam tours every year.
The wife is Vietnamese and the husband is American.
I've heard very good things about them from my girlfriend (Vietnamese) and friends.
Contact them and get recommendations.
Have fun-I hope to do this tour soon...

That sounds like an exciting vacation. I've been only to the the main cities-Saigon and Hanoi, as well as a cruise on Ha Long Bay. I really liked Hanoi but Saigon was a little too intense. Ha Long Bay was beautiful. Those places you want to go are supposed to be pretty nice.

Hoi an was one of my favorite cities on my 4 month Southeast Asia trip. Go eat at all the cool little restaurants and enjoy the French architecture that wasn't destroyed in the war. I think one day we rented bikes and rode around the city and went to the beach.
The main thing I remember in hue was touring the ruins of the old capital. I didn't go to da nang but overall it sounds like you have a good trip planned and it should be a great time.

Looking forward to the future report on this. It's high on my list now that I've visited a few other countries in the area.
Big reason why I want to go. My dad was in Saigon I think 2 days before it fell.

Thanks for the responses so far. We are really looking forward to it as well. Will be sure to share our experience here.
Also visiting Koh Samui for a week before but that's pretty much gonna be chilling at the beach.

I assume you're flying Bangkok Air to Samui as they have a monopoly on that airport because they built it.
I flew them from BKK to Siem Reap, back to BKK to HKT.
If you are flying them on your flight before Koh Samui don't worry if the connection is tight, they will just delay the second plane if it's one of those same flight # deals like #924 is (REP > BKK > HKT). They are pretty good about it since they know they are handling a lot of intra-Thailand travel to the islands.
If it's something you pieced together make sure you have time if coming from out of country.

Actually flying SilkAir from Singapore to Samui. On the way to Da Nang we are flying Bangkok Air with a connection in BKK. On the way back we are flying direct from Da Nang to Sing.
Going to Siem Reap in a few weeks, so open for recommendations there as well.

Sorry, was at a wedding outside of Buffalo last weekend.
Siem Reap is cool. You really can stay anywhere and not be far from the sites by tuk tuk. You'll need a driver if you want to go check out things further out. Pretty much 3 to 5 dollars US gets you a ride anywhere in the greater town area.
The downtown scene there is very fun and festive. It isn't all temples if you don't want it to be.

Heading to Siem Reap in November.
What were your favorite sites? Angkor Wat gets the most pub, but it seems like there are some less crowded places in the complex.

Don't mention the war. I did but I think I got away with it.
My kids would have been (or would now be) so bored.

Outside of the big 3 of Angkor Wat, Bayon (Faces) and Ta Prohm (Tomb Raider), I liked Pre Rup at sunset. Pretty temple.
There's another temple far out of town called Beng Mealea that I wish I had time for that you may want to check out.

I had a guide and he talked about the war, obviously because there are bullet holes in Angkor Wat, showed me how they used the palm trees to slice throats and stuff.
When it came to him, I couldn't tell if he wanted me to stay away from the subject personally as his English wasn't very good talking about his grandparents being killed. He seemed sad so I just talked about it in the broad sense of things like he did.
I've been fascinated by history and these places since being a kid, so I would have loved to have gone as a kid. You have to know your children

Mid stream, he asks, "you are American?"
Me: "yes sir, I am. "
We both finish about the same time and start washing our hands in the sinks...
Him: " really astonishing, isn't it?"
At this point, I'm a bit confused, "excuse me?"
Him, while looking at me from the mirror above his sink: "well, here we are, sharing the facilities and talking like gentlemen. It wasn't very long ago that we would be trying to kill each other."
Me: "yes sir. Quite honestly, I prefer the way it is now."
Him: "me too, my friend. Me too."
He smiled, nodded, and left.
That's my cool story on my quick business trip to VN.

We did the Hanoi, Sapa, Halong triangle. All abut 3-4 hours from Hanoi, great food and cheap. Bowl of Pho for breakfast for $1, super nice hotel for $35, beer 50 cents. Wanted to make Hoi An/ Da Nang which looks great but couldn't fit it in. Cant go wrong there. You'll have a blast. Awesome trip.

Do you feel safe in Vietnam as an American? Are the people friendly? Were there areas you were warned not to visit?
I've read that Vietnam has become friendly to American tourists, but I'd like to know from people who've been there.

i never felt unwelcomed, but there were a few times I felt like I got a "why are you here?" Look.

I have been there several times if anything they hate the French not the Americans . They love Americans.

I felt safe everywhere in Vietnam and the people were very friendly. Never felt like there was any animosity towards us because we were American. The most dangerous thing you'll do there is get in a car or moped. Stoplights and traffic lanes are just a suggestion there. Craziest drivers I've ever seen.
