To be honest, many Americans have the thought that ordering spaghetti in Italy will be like back in America. Noodles drenched in Bolognaise sauce. It is not like 'Chef Boy-R-Dee'. Food is good; you have to understand Italian cuisine sometimes.

Food wise, Italy is one of my favorites. Also, their gelato is fantastic!

Don't be afraid to go there, because MIL had her experience. Too much history and the people are nice.

My first night in Venice, a couple walked in and asked the Maitre D' if they had pizza. Answer was no, obviously, and he walked out. Maybe this was OP's in-laws

My only complaint about Italian food is that the 2-hour dinners can get tiresome after 7 days

I have two kids under 5, having a two hour dinner is phenomenal. 7 days of it and my children might end up in foster care.

I find Italy to be one of the easiest trips for Americans who haven’t travelled much outside the US. I guess your level of enjoyment depends on the itinerary you choose. Italy is still our favorite destination for numerous reasons.
A ten year old might be a bit young for certain trips. I feel as though travel, Particularly international travel, requires a bit of sophistication and maturity to be truly appreciated. If yours is still one that has a diet that consists of 3-4 items on the children’s menu, stick to Orlando for a bit longer.

I have lived in Provence and traveled to Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. I prefer the food in Italy over France. I preferred the cost of Spain (although this was 2008 - I don’t know if it is still inexpensive, but it was a lot cheaper than France).

If I had to choose one trip between all those it would easily be Italy. They are all worth a visit though.

I really want to go to Greece and Croatia. Hopefully soon.

Thanks for all the responses and recommendations! It’s given us a lot to think about. Apparently we need to revisit the Italy idea! lol

Are you going to Italy or asking for recommendations of places to visit.

If the latter; Switzerland. Probably my favorite trip of all time. Scenery is second to none. Google Switzerland and go to images. You’ll think it’s all airbrushed certain areas, but it’s everywhere and better in person. Absolutely amazing!!!

Don’t forget mains and dessert
Italy is amazing, the food is fantastic. Not sure how your MIL didn’t like the food, was she on a cheap group tour that only fed them low quality food? Like others have said, Italy is super easy for Americans and has a large amount of different cities and areas to explore, great food to eat, and is a good location for a first international trip.
Spain or Portugal would also be very good options for a first trip, cheaper, beautiful sites, most people can speak English. Barcelona and Lisbon and incredibly beautiful cities with amazing food.

I havent been able to travel much because I’m still young. But I did a trip to the former Yugoslavia countries over the summer. It kicked some major butt. So cheap. Really nice people. Got to stay in 5 star hotels for the price of a la quinta. Food was heavy on stews, and meats, which was great. But also like in Croatia, a lot of it used to be Italian territory, and so they still have high caliber Italian foods.

Did 2 weeks there and wish I could have explored more.

We then hit Turkey, which was just as cheap, and the food was spectacular. Easily could have done another few weeks there. Istanbul was awesome. Ephesus was amazing. Cappadocia was jaw dropping. And Gobekli Tepe was humbling.

Those 3 weeks cost me about $3k, which was definitely worth it. I just had to pick up an extra shift every week this semester
