I'm going today to do my application appointment for TSA Pre-Check. I seem to remember something about last summer's travel season where TSA was cautioning people that even Pre-Check people weren't necessarily guaranteed to get through their lines quickly and easily. Does anyone else remember this? Was it because of the busy summer season or a TSA staffing shortage or what?

Has anyone had a Pre-Check experience that hasn't been quick and easy?

I'm pretty sure it was increased number of travelers and a staffing shortage. I've had Global Entry (which includes TSAPre) since Dec 2013, and I've never had a significant issue with TSAPre. Sometimes, especially the first year or two that I had it, the TSAPre lines wouldn't be open, so that sucked. But I rarely run into that now.

Sorry to be dense, what's the difference between Pre-Check and Global Entry?

We just signed up for TSA precheck a few months ago and got our ID number within 2 weeks.

Used it for the first time going from MSY TO MCO and then MCO to MSY last week and pre check went very smoothly. MCO had a long checkpoint line and pre check I walked right up to a person and sailed through.

I believe Pre-Check Is just for US travel and then Global Entry is for Global travel (includes pre check).

Global Entry includes TSA Pre. Global Entry expedites coming back into the country.

TSA Pre just helps you get through security faster/with less hassle.

Pre Check gets you expedited access through security checkpoints at US airports.

Global entry, includes Pre Check, and gets you expedited access through customs. Global entry costs about $15 more than pre check, so worth it to some.

I want to say every 5 years, but that could be wrong.

I just got Global Entry, and boy, was it worth the $100 for 5 years. Expedited security screening like TSA PreCheck, plus expedited customs processing. You interact with a kiosk, which asks a few questions, takes your pic & fingerprints, then prints a receipt. You simply hand the receipt to a customs agent as you walk away.

Got mine at MSY. Took about a week between filing out application, selecting appointment time. Afternoon of appointment had my number.

Make your appointment but then keep checking back at the availability. Even if your original appointment is far away, earlier slots will open up.

It took about 12 days from time of application. I did the interview/photo/fingerprints at MSY.....from the interview, it took 2 weeks for the card to arrive, but I flew just fine without the card, as your passport gets coded.

Somewhat off topic, but I've found Mobile Passport to be even faster than Global Entry (if the airport has it). Answer the questions on the app when you land, generate the QR code, and walk right through. No kiosks.

ETA: and its free

There are times lately where pre check at MSY on concourse D has been so long I just used the SkyPriority lane. That is pretty rare. By long I mean 30 people long. I am not patient enough for that so I sacrifice and take out my laptop.

Used precheck in SLC yesterday morning. Regular security line had roughly 100+ in it. Precheck, maybe 5. Today at Ohare, massive lines in regular security. Precheck maybe 25-30. Breezed through.

Worth every penny.
