Portland, OR in February: Updated with Review and Pictures!

Hi everyone. I have a job interview up in the Portland area in mid February and can schedule an extra day or two (up to me) after the interview to explore the area. I've never been to Oregon so not really sure what there is to do besides visit a bunch of breweries. I was thinking about going skiing on Mt. Hood, however all the hotels are sold out for that Saturday night (Presidents day weekend). Should I still look into skiing just staying in another area, hanging out in downtown Portland, or renting a car and driving around? Thanks for your suggestions

Plenty of hiking within an hours drive. I personally like the Coast this time of year for the storms and much less people. We've had very mild temps overall.

It isn't that far of a drive to Timberline from Portland.

After talking with my friend who's gonna meet me out there, I think skiing has been ruled out and hiking is in. Do you know of any relatively easy to moderate hikes in the area? We will likely rent a car for that saturday to explore so it can be an hr or two away from pdx. I guess when I pump my own gas I'll look like a professional out there

Was going to say Mt. Bachelor is only a couple hours further from PDX than Mt. Hood if you wanted to ski.

Go to Cannon Beach it's cool in the winter, so is the drive out to Bend, OR, get out of the city it's a dump

There's hiking wherever you go, so I'd figure that part out first.

You would but more than likely you won't be visiting an area that allows you to.

Bump for this trip leaving in a week. As of current, plan is to leave Hillsboro area Sat morning and go to cannon beach (per trillhog's suggestion), have lunch and explore the area. Are there any hikes or breweries near this beach area? If not, once we are done with the beach, we will head back to portland and look for breweries/nightlife. Flight out sunday morning is 6am so preferably someplace close to the airport region if this is safe/good. Will also probably drive across the bridge to washington to check off another state

Don't leave Portland without going to Great Notion. Craft beer drinker's dream. Pine State Biscuits is right next door also and it's a pretty good breakfast spot!

Went to Portland last July for the Oregon Brewer's Festival with my fiancée (never made my review thread, whoops!) and I'm heading back this July with a few of my friends.
Great Notion was by far my favorite brewery I've ever been to. Top notch stuff. Juice, Jr., Double Stack, Blueberry Muffin are 3 I'd definitely recommend trying. That's a NEIPA, Stout and Sour.
Went to Cannon Beach as well and there's a Pelican Brewery there, but I didn't care for it too much. Plenty of options for eating though and tons of great little shops line the main road there. Walking on the beach is very serene, but if it's a clear day you can't beat the view from Ecola State Park. If I remember correctly you had to pay $5 to enter. It's just several minutes north of Cannon Beach. You take a winding road through some forest and then end up at this amazing viewpoint up on a cliff side of sorts.
We also drove up to Astoria which is directly at the NW corner of Oregon. Another awesome brewery there called Fort George which was a close second for me to Great Notion.
As for as hiking goes, we didn't too much while there. We did some sightseeing and waterfall stuff to the east of Portland and drove along the Historic Columbia River Highway, but I'm not sure if parts of it are still closed because of the recent fires they had there. Another great viewpoint along there is Portland Womens Forum. We stopped and stared there for probably 30 minutes. That's a short drive down the Highway after taking the Corbett Exit off of I-84 East.
So much to do there though. It's a very beautiful state that has tons to offer.
Last thing I'll say is if you're into pizza, try and get a reservation at Apizza Scholls. They make a certain amount of dough each day so walk-ins aren't guaranteed a pie. If you can't make it there, Ken's Artisan Pizza is also a very good pie place.

That is exactly the type of info I was looking for, thanks a bunch . While I only have 1 day to explore I think Cannon Beach and Pelican Brewery, then ecola park for views/quick hike, then great notion for beers back in portland will make for an excellent day

Cape Lookout hike is near Tillamook and is phenomenal. You could drive there from Canon no problem. It is a stunning hike along the coast that isn’t too strenuous. Bring proper footwear, it was soaked when I went the other week.

A lot of good suggestions. As someone mentioned, bad weather is often the best time to go to the beach in Oregon. The waters cold year-round, so you're not going swimming without a wet suit. But the storm watching is great. Watching those waves hit the rocks and explode into the air is cool.
If you go to the coast, take a look at the map, below. The path highlighted in blue is about 90 minutes to Cannon Beach, 45 minutes from Cannon Beach to Tillamook, and 90 minutes back to Portland. The Red and Black paths are under 30 minutes to Astoria and Pacific City, respectively.
If you go to Cannon Beach via Hwy 26, it is a cool town with several breweries, of which Pelican is the best. While Pelican is the best brewery in Cannon Beach, it is not the Best Pelican location. That is in Pacific City, which is a 25 minute drive south of Tillamook. As someone mentioned, Ecola State Park is spectacular. There are some short hikes there, and you can walk the beach (Follow road to Indian Beach). The beach at low tide is pretty cool with some neat tidal pools. If the water is not too rough, you'll see some starfish and other stuff.
From Cannon Beach, you can drive along the coast to Tillamook. The drive is absolutely stunning. There are places to pull over and take pictures. In Tillamook, you can go to the Tillamook cheese factory, and hit up De Garde Brewing, if you like world class sour beers. Tillamook, itself is not much to look at, and you can smell the dairy farms.
From there, it's 90 minutes back to Portland up Hwy 6, or you can drive the 25 minutes to Pacific City to the original Pelican Brewpub, there. The beer is good, but that's not why you go. The view is as good as it gets. Kape Kiwanda is right there to the right, and a haystack rock right in front of you. You can hike up on the bluff at Cape Kiwanda if you have to wait for a table. It's only about 15 minutes round trip. Google Pelican Brewpub, and you'll see what the view looks like.
Someone also mentioned Astoria. I highlighted that in the red ink. The drive isn't as pretty as heading down to Tillamook, but Astoria is a neat town at the mouth of the Columbia. A couple of breweries to hit up are Fort George (best brewery experience in the state). Make sure to hit up the Lovell Taproom at Fort George (there are 3 bars, and that is one of them), since thats where all the experimental beers are. The upstairs pizza restaurant is better than the downstairs restaurant, IMO. Also, Buoy Brewing is very cool, and right on the water.

Over 60 stouts, and there are some of the best in the business. If you don't have tickets, don't waste your time going to Astoria. If you can get tickets, make sure you have a designated driver, and/or a room in Astoria/Gearhart/Seaside. You WILL get hammered...

Aside from Great Notion, if you're in Portland for a day, Modern Times* just opened, and they have some great beers. Within a few blocks of Modern Times, you have Cascade Brewing*, Loyal Legion Taproom*, Rogue's experimental brewery, Wayfinder Brewing, Burnside Brewing, Base Camp Brewing, Culmination Brewing*, and Ex Novo Brewing*.
Just across the river, you'll find Deschutes*, 10 Barrel*, and Breakside Slabtown*. All are easy Uber rides.

Thank you very much for your help and suggestions, the google map that you routed out is very helpful . The blue trip seems reasonable for next Saturday (2/17), I'm hoping the weather cooperates (as of now 51*F and showers). Unfortunately, I am not a big fan of stouts so will likely avoid the beer festival in Astoria (though that will save us the drive up and back). The views of Pelican brewpub are spectacular, that's the kind of adventure/ kodak moment I'm looking for on this trip. I'll add Tillamook to the itinerary, a 90 minute drive is Baton Rouge to Nola, perfectly reasonable in my book. More than likely my picture at the brewpub will look like this
