I’m going to Northern NH for 2 weeks in September and most likely again in November. I’m flying into Portland, Maine and I’m looking at spending a few nights there.

Anyone have any must see places, towns, and restaurants in the area?

No specific recs, but Northern NH is so beautiful. Further south will be overrun with leaf-watchers that time of year.

That part of the state is MAGA.

Definitely drive the Kancamagus Highway. Stop in Lincoln to look around. Go at dusk or after to try to spot moose along the tree line. Check out Sabbaday Falls and Cathedral Point. Just spent time this summer in Conway and Lincoln, NH. Loved NH — exceeded expectations.

Went to Portland as well. Try Becky’s Diner. The Portland Light Head had lovely views—Maine’s oldest lighthouse. The Custom’s House in downtown Portland was beautiful inside for historical architecture.

How far north in NH are you going?

The coldest temperature recorded in New Hampshire was -50°F at the top of Mt. Washington on January 22, 1885. However, the coldest wind chill ever recorded in the U.S. was -108°F on February 6, 2023, also on Mt. Washington.

I think there is valley that funnels wind that makes the wind chill so low.

I can't help really at all with Berlin and Gorham. It's been decades since I spent any time up that way other than passing through to Maine. I feel like everywhere else is about an hour or so away from Berlin so keep that in mind.

There's some great nature spots up there. Errol/Umbagogg and Dixville Notch are under an hour away, and Rangeley is about 1.5 hours. Lots of hunting and fishing up there in the Great North Woods, this I know. I can't recommend any places for food though. There's probably something good to find in Colebrook though, if you make the drive over Dixville Notch. Jackson is a postcard town and has The Wentworth for good food options.

If you want to make a trip to the Littleton/Bethlehem/Franconia area then I can make some recommendations. Nice area with small towns and great nature. Lancaster would be about halfway between, and there might be some places to stop and check out like the Polish Princess Bakery and Copper Pig Brewery.

A fun fact up that way- there was a WWII POW camp in Milan (pronounced Mile-in) where the German prisoners did logging for the paper mills in the area. A couple attempted escape but found themselves surrounded by forests and descendents of French Canadians who weren't welcoming and just came back to the camp.

Thanks. I plan on venturing out on the weekends. It looks like there are some great hikes in the area that I am staying. I already have a spot picked out for a lobster roll as soon as I leave the airport in Portland. I’ve never been to Maine or New Hampshire so I’m really looking forward to it and the cooler weather.

Me and my wife are doing 1 week trip in October. Staying in Conway a few nights to do the railroad experience and scenic driving and then a few nights in Boston to do the typical tourist things.

Please report back a highlight when you return of things you recommend and places to eat.
