Passport/visa help for first trip out of the country

I am currently applying for my first passport. Is there any reason not to get the 52 page book? It seems like there are no extra costs. Does it take longer to get it?
Also I’ll be traveling to France and maybe Belgium. Would I need a visa to enter? I don’t plan on staying more than two weeks. I know that once I get into the Schengen zone I can move to any of the countries within it.
TIA
ETA: on average how long did it take to get your passports

I just had to apply for a new passport (my old one was long expired so I had to go through the whole process again) and it was definitely more expensive to get the 52 page book, but I can't remember how much more exactly. Just make sure you don't get the card because without the book, you're restricted to travel only by land or sea.
I was afraid I was cutting it close in terms of it arriving in time for my upcoming trip so I paid the extra $60 to expedite the passport (2-3 weeks) instead of the standard arrival time of 4-6 weeks. However, it came in less than 2 weeks. Better safe than sorry, though.
I had to check whether or not I need a visa in order to enter Japan, and as long as my stay is less than 90
days, it's not necessary. I would imagine that the countries you're visiting would probably be the same way, but I would Google it just to be certain.

Another question: when you give them your birth certificate, do they keep it and send it back?

Weird, on the state department it says it’s the same price.

No visa needed for most tourist stays of that length at the large majority of "touristy" countries (including Belgium and France).
Just google the state department country page for wherever you want to go and the visa requirements are on there.

I have both and think the passport card is good to have as a back up ID. In fact, I carry it around most of the time when abroad and leave my passport book at the hotel. I keep a picture of my passport book info page on my phone.

if you plan on doing more traveling in the future even if only a couple of trips a year within the U.S. consider getting GlobalEnrty/TSAprecheck. It is $100.00 for five years and can make travel less of a hassle. typically the regular security lines are full and the TSA pre line will have two or people. My says the time it saves going through Customs is worth more than the $100 bucks, but I haven't done any international travel since getting it.

You need your passport (the book) to enter a foreign country unless, as noted, you’re driving into Mexico or Canada or on a cruise. They can’t stamp the card. There is no earthly reason not to get both.

Yes, they keep it and it doesn’t come back with your passport. It will come a few days later, so don’t freak out like my wife did.
