Overnight Train Travel in Europe

For those that have done this, and have done the private cabin accommodation, is there a major difference in the Grand and 1st Class cabins and how quiet and smooth is the journey? Will we be able to actually sleep?

Depends on how well you sleep with background noise of the rails and gentle rocking. Consider noise cancelling headphones or earplugs if you're a light sleeper.

I haven't done an overnight train, but Seat 61 is a great resource that should answer some of your questions.

Ive only done first class which is nice enough but very small. And you have small bunk beds so i sleep up top and my wife sleeps on the bottom. I never get much sleep on them as the train usually makes stops in the middle of the night and you can hear people get on/off and horns blowing, etc. Also, even if you are due to arrive at 9am at your destination, they usually wake everyone at 6am. Flying is so cheap now, we haven't done an overnight in 10 years maybe.

Trains can be different. But I've done a few overnighters in various private cabins. I always slept fine. Typically in twin-sized bunk beds. It's just as smooth as any other train. It'll stop throughout the night and that can wake you up. Have a few drinks before bed, and you'll sleep just fine.
It's interesting to fall asleep in one country and wake up in another. I think it's a great way to get from one place to another without wasting valuable daytime adventure time.
You could travel during the day and stay in a hotel, or you could travel and sleep at the same time while experiencing something new.

Depends entirely on the train company. You just need to research the class cabins for the specific one you’re looking at.
That being said, you’re likely to wake up a few times in the middle of the night.
It’s not a glamorous thing unless your get the super super nice cabin that is like the old school sleep cabins from the movies

It will be a little noisy but not bad.
