NC beaches in May

Going to a wedding in May in Raleigh. I'm planning on staying in Raleigh for two nights and then bouncing over to a beach location for a few more. Anyone know of a good place to stay with dedicated beach access?

If early may, it can be pretty chilly fyi. Especially the water. Its not like the Gulf. Not saying you can't enjoy the beach, just keep that in mind.

I'm sorry I have nothing to contribute here except that frontier and southwest both fly nola to raleigh nonstop now for cheap ($49 one-way). Frontier has their nonstop flights Mondays and Fridays whereas southwest has theirs on Sundays and Fridays

When we to the Outer Banks in 2014, we stayed in a condo in Kill Devil Hills - I think it was called Wellington - managed by Sun Realty. Great location (you could see the Wright Bros. Memorial from the back side) and right on the beach.
Not sure if that unit/complex rents for less than a week, but I am sure Sun has something that does. Water will be cold, and the air temps might be - and it will be breezy.

Leaving on a Friday and it looks like it's better to fly out of AEX and save 4 hours of driving to NO. $280 from AEX (Delta) as opposed to $240 from NO (Southwest).

May 4th, 11th, and 18th are $49 for a one-way ticket on Frontier (not sure which weekend you're planning). It's a 9:50am flight arriving at 12:50pm. If you leave out of AEX you've got a connection in ATL for at least an hour each way, some flights are >2 hour connections.
Southwest has good one-ways for $101 on the way back (Tuesdays or Wednesdays for all of May) into New Orleans, American also has $71 one-ways on Tuesdays.
If it's you + your SO, $150ish roundtrip out of MSY including a nonstop vs the $280 on Delta (that's the basic economy fare as well so no seat selection) x 2 means roughly $300 total vs $600 total. If your drive is 4 hours each way, stick with AEX. If it's only 2 each way, then this may be something to keep in mind

We live in Cenla so it would be about 3.5 hours each way.
My wife is a teacher and they have testing that week so I'm not sure if they'' be done on Thursday so we can leave that early on Friday.
Looks like $117 per person round trip with Frontier if we return on Monday. I may just do that and book us a beach trip elsewhere another time. My wife will be around 7 months pregnant the time of this trip so that's also putting a damper on the summer travel plans.

If you're just wanting to hit the beach look into the beach towns around Wilmington. It's a 2 hour drive on the interstate. If you're looking for more natural scenery that's low key then the outerbanks will be at least 3 hrs.
The weather will be nice but like others said the water might be a little chilly.

We have stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn at Kitty Hawk and the Double Tree near Atlantic Beach. KH is on an outer bank that faces east, AB faces south. The water will be cold regardless but waves are usually rougher on the east facing beaches.
Both of those hotels have direct access to the beach but you should not have any problem getting to the beach, especially in May. If you are not staying on the beach there are parking areas that have access.
KH is between Duck and Kill Devil Hills.
It is a little shorter drive to Wilmington then KH but I would go to the outer banks rather than Wilmington, especially if this is your first visit.
What type of activities interest you? That could be a factor in where you should go.
(Sorry I down voted your post, clicked on the arrow by mistake.)

For 30 more minutes of driving it might be worth it to just drive down to Myrtle Beach.

It depends on what you want to do.
If you like to play a lot of miniature/goofy golf, or real golf, or go to places like Ripley's Believe It or Not, or float in an inner tube in a lazy river at the hotel, then MB is the place to go. FYI, North Myrtle Beach is less touristy; more like the NC outer banks (OBX).
If you just want to sit on the beach and maybe get in the water and experience shrinkage (assume you are male) then it doesn't much matter. But Wilmington might be the best place as it is closer to Raleigh and has some good places to eat. But, you can find some good places to eat at any of the locations.
If you are looking for some unique sites to visit then the NC OBX are probably a better choice. No where else can you find the Wright Brothers Memorial or Jockey Ridge State Park for example.
I assumed you are traveling with someone but if not then Wilmington or MB are probably better choices to meet someone, especially in May.
If you just want to ride around and see stuff then go to OBX. It is a fairly long drive from the north end down to Cape Hatteras, and from there you could take the ferry to Ocracoke Island, where Blackbeard the Pirate hung out and died.

Wrightsville Beach right outside of Wilmington. I was there last May, and it was warm enough to hang out on the beach, plus there is some good nightlife on the island. I would recommend Jimmy's. Place gets pretty crazy on the weekends.
The BridgeTender is also a nice place to dine while you are out there.
