Some great information below, but no one has asked where you are looking to go in Europe?

Cheapest is also a nebulous term when it comes to travel. Are you looking for the absolute bare minimum flight and it doesnt matter where you go? If so, go on google flights and play around with dates and locations til you find one that strikes all your chords.

But just be cautioned that if your goal is to say go to Paris and you find a cheap way to fly into Madrid and take a flight or train to Paris, the time/inconvenience of it all might make it "cheaper" to just fly into Paris.

Reminds me of a friend who was all excited about his cheap ticket to Dubrovnik....except he wanted to visit Venice. "It's just a quick train ride, right?" Ummm...depends on what you mean by quick. 8 hrs, so you waste another day getting to where you really want to go. 8 hrs back, and you need to be in the departure city the night before to make an early flight. So you've just wasted two entire days of vacation on your "cheap" ticket, plus the added expense of train fare.

I show Iceland, Copenhagen, Paris, Frankfurt and Lisbon as all being under $1,000 round trip. Frankfurt is like mid 700s (but not the direct). That is just from Google Flights and not open jaw or other scenarios which could find lower price.

Never been to Europe so have a lot to see.
So if I took the $754 Frankfurt one, I would probably want to stick with some areas not too far from there huh?

How long do you have? Do you prefer to keep moving, to do outdoors activities, to stay in one place and soak up the feel, etc.

The classic rookie mistake is to attempt to cover too much territory. Figure out how much time you have, what you really want to see/do, then do some research to find out what's potentially interesting to you in the target area.

Novice Euro travelers can gain lots of practical, basic tips from the Rick Steves website and messageboards.

Just remember that Frankfurt was nearly leveled in WWII, so it's a modern city low on "old world" architectural charm. If you want someplace that "looks" old European, pick a different city.

We have 7-10 days in window of May 24 to June 2.

So even if Frankfurt is cheapest, it may not be the best fit.

If you have 7-10 days, then I would definitely do Frankfurt and then travel via Autobahn or train to Munich / Salzburg / Nuremberg. That's plenty of time to do it all.

Or, go to Strasbourg and the Alsace region of France.

Well it depends. Paris is 3 hours by train, Munich 4 hours so Frankfurt could be a good option but just realize you have to get back to Frankfurt for flight home (if you do round trip).

Op figure out your trip first. You have London, Paris, Amsterdam, frankfurt, Munich, Barcelona, Rome, Milan, Dublin, etc. that would all likely be cheapest to fly directly into than to fly somewhere else and get there.

Set a flight tracker on google flights. You can likely get sub $800 flights into many of those depending on where you are flying out of.

That's the flight I'm looking at when we go to Munich, Prague, & Vienna.

Are there directs on American to CLT from MSY? Well doesn’t matter much honestly.

I routinely see good deals on flights to Munich. You can get there from CLT. Just saying I’d prefer to fly into a destination city.

Got an alert that there’s a big Euro sale. Saw one stop 2-3 hr layover flights from MSY-CDG on American for $600/pp at the end of October, but I think there are supposed to be some sale fares in the spring also.
