Have done the Gatlinburg trip a couple of times during the past couple of years and visited Branson last year. Looking to do something a little different but still want to see the mountains. Anyone visit either of these places? Any recommendations?

if those places are your thing, Helen is probably perfect for you. just be advised there isnt the national park on the edge of the city or Dollywood/pigeon forge next door for further entertainment

IMO Helen absolutely sucks, but people love it

Helen has become a trashy biker shithole since the Tornado tore up the place and they rebuilt with shitty biker bars. The areas outside Helen are nice though.

I am definitely not looking to spend time in either city. I am looking more to spend time hiking and checking out the trails, falls in the surrounding areas. I have seen pictures online of Little River Canyon and Desoto Falls near Mentone and some nice looking areas near Helen.

They hate you because they don't want you sending more people there. It's perfectly nice as it is, we don't need to send more people there to make it a shithole like gatlinburg.

Gatlinburg is a shithole because of what's there not because visitors go.

Highlands is already a huge attraction. It just doesn't have the knife shops, putt putt, and other junk.

Highlands is nowhere near the level of attraction as G'burg, it's not even in the same solar system maybe even Galaxy. If it becomes that way, those type of places will come in. As of right now, it mostly attracts a certain crowd and it is great that way.

Highlands/Cashiers is to the mountains what 30A used to be for the beach. Rich folks enjoying pristine scenery, hiking, and golf.

Why would people hate you for recommending highlands / cashiers?

If you are looking for a nice mountain town it doesn't get much better than those 2.

I think he meant the folks who are already there would hate him for recommending that area. They want it to remain their own secret, less traffic and development.

Lot of Louisiana folks have property in & around Highlands.

I have peeps in Asheville so my personal attention and experience is more centered there.

Was in Helen around two weeks ago, as someone else posted, walk through town, have a beer, eat a "German" meal and GTFO.

We pulled in around 3 in the afternoon and my wife fell in love with the place, by noon the next day she had had enough, fickle biotch lol.

Other than tubing/rafting not much going on there, and the fake Bavarian shtick really got on my nerves. JMHO

DIAF

Although in truth, if your first choice is Helen, people aren't usually moving down the list to Highlands

Mentone and the Little River area is way off the beaten path for most tourists. To me, that's always been the charm: just drive around and enjoy the place. Try the little park where AL-35 crosses LR. You can walk down to the river and just wander. The LR Canyon Parkway on the West side will take you to some great overlook views. You can always fill your cheesy-tourist quota by touring the Alabama (band) Museum in Ft. Payne.

My family has sort of a semi-tradition of renting a cabin in the Blueridge/Balirsville area of Georgia for Thanksgiving. You can rent some real nice cabins (hot tubs, outdoor fireplaces, porch with scenic view of mountains, big screen tv for football, etc.) for very reasonable prices.

I think that sounds like what you are wanting to do. We love it. The cabins are more secluded, but Blue Ridge (which is a decent Georgia mountain town) is like a 15-20 min drive. We would visit town once or twice while we were up there.

Give this site a look: LINK

I think that's the rental agency we use, but not certain. My parents usually make the reservation.
