Peak foliage. Already have tickets to Portland ME, will rent a car. 6 nights. Thinking of:
Acadia NP
Backroads to Conway NH, Kakamangus Hwy., Littleton
Stowe VT
Lake Winnepesake (sp) and environs

Suggestions? Sights, accommodations, etc...

FrommPortland take a short trip down to Kennebunkport. Especially a drive along Shore Dr towards the Bush compound.
Sort of our east coast Monterey. Really cool.

We drove backroads from Portland to Bar Harbor through Boothbay Harbor. We actually spent a few days In Boothbay. This was the first week of October 2018 and the leaves were incredible on the drive

Taking the Kanc from North Conway to Lincoln and then up through Franconia Notch is a beautiful drive. Staying in Franconia/Sugar Hill/Littleton is a good stopping place before Vermont. I'd recommend going to Polly's Pancake Parlor, but get there early because it gets packed that time of year.

Driving through Smugglers Notch from Stowe to Underhill/Jericho on the way to Burlington is another great drive.

If you are a beer/brewery person I (and others here) can recommend places along the way.

We did a similar trip in late July/early August in 2018. Drove from NC and picked up friends in Portland; took I-95 toward Bar Harbor (probably exited at Bangor) but took Hwy 1 back. After we dropped them at the airport we drove to North Conway, NH then headed home.

Places to see enroute or at Acadia/Bar Harbor area:
- Camden, drive up to Mt. Battle viewpoint to see the town and Bay
- Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory, you go up in a bridge tower for a view of the area, near Bucksport. There is a Fort Knox Historic site near there too.
- Bernard, Maine (near Acadia), eat at Thurston Lobster Pound. It's on the water and you pick your lobster before it's cooked.
- Jordan Pond for lunch in Acadia; get the popovers.
- Hike to Bubble Rock in Acadia.
- Schoodic Point - it's about an hour drive from Bar Harbor.

- Kancamagus Hwy - stop at Sabbaday Falls and take the short hike. It is similar to the falls at Franconia Notch State Park which is north of Lincoln, NH.
- Drive, or take the cog train, up Mt. Washington. We didn't do that, maybe next time.
- If you happen to drive near Battleboro, Vermont, stop at the Vermont Country Deli for a sandwich.

We did a fall foliage road trip to southwest VT, western Mass. and eastern NY last fall.

This is a Revolutionary War Monument in Bennington, VT and for $5 you can take the elevator to the observation deck; those vertical vindows.

These pictures were taken Oct. 20th and I think we were a little past peak but that was the earliest we could go for some reason.

I love going to New England and hope to go every fall until they take my driver's license away. Oh, and 6 nights is not enough.
