My son is going to a leadership event in DC this summer, and we're looking to get him a new checked bag.
What recommendations do yall have? We were thinking a medium size
***also, recommend hard or soft sided?

If only a week then likely can do it with carry-on and backpack easily.
I have a Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Expandable Luggage 25-Inch
or
SWISSGEAR Sion Softside Checked-Medium 25-Inch
anything cheaper I have no recommandation.

My "go to bag" is a Travelpro Maxlite 5. I've bought off Facebook Market Place several bags so no need to pay ful retail unless you wanted to.
But...
Seems like a rolling duffel would be a great option for a teenager, especially if you pick one that’s durable, simple, and easy to maneuver. Teens tend to like them because they’re less “formal” than a suitcase and easier to stuff with odd-shaped items.
Have had a High Sierra (Various Sizes) for years. It's a solid bag. Osprey or Eagle Creek are also great options, but higher priced.

Whole family has TravelPro. Cry once, buy once.

I recommend Samsonite Freeform. 24" is the medium. It is hard sided.
It is definitely not the best luggage, but I think it is the best value for money.

I also agree with a rolling duffel. The hard sided spinners with fully exposed wheels break all the time so I prefer less wheels and more "coverage" protecting them from damage.
I have two size duffels, the 28" Bold from TravelPro and the 34" Detour from Samsonite and I think the Samsonite bag is superior and wish I had bought the 29" Detour instead of the 28" Bold but they are both nice bags, keep things secure, roll easy and are just about impossible to exceed 50lbs.
The Bold from TravelPro is a little wider but I find myself using a full size suitcase if I need something wider.

I buy luggage from tj maxx. I’ve had too many pieces damaged by baggage handling to spend good money on nice luggage. Broken wheels, broken zippers, ripped fabric, cracked hard shells, and just the general scuffed up like they’ve been drug down the tarmac. They don’t give a shite about tossing luggage around.
