Luggage for lengthy (9 weeks) Europe trip

Staying in hostels. gonna be flying a good bit so need to pack as light as possible.
What type of luggage do you use?
best way to pack light?

Probably just a carry on suitcase. Do laundry every 5 or 6 days

Usually where you stay does Laundry everyday and some have Laundry that you can do your own. I only use one bag and just underwear, socks, slacks, and shirt. If you need something additional you can buy it. I usually bring a good towel and wash rag, my own soap and shampoo, and a bag of Razors cheap. You will be ok and I have been to 16 countries!

Buy a used 50L backpack on Ebay. It will be big enough to hold everything you need and small enough to work as a carry on. This will be especially helpful if you fly budget airlines like RyanAir or EasyJets.
Pack light and do laundry every few days. Also, roll your clothes if necessary to make them fit. Be sure to have at least 1 jacket that is waterproof/warm.

I was a creative writing major. Went to Europe for a few months after graduation. The last week there, I left my journal in a phone booth in Crete while trying to change some travel plans. Went back later to get it, and it was gone. Never had it returned either (I had my address and such in it).
That was heartbreaking. Hundreds of pages. My writings from basically a semester of travel.
As for the OP: I carried my backpack. But I also carried my camping gear with me and did quite a bit of camping in Greece while I was there, so traditional luggage wasn't appropriate.

I always take my Redwing Backpack LINK. In europe when you are going through train stations,up steps, walking to your hostel/ hotel, etc. Its a lot easier to carry a backpack than a suitcase, especially a rolling suitcase. I have a small backpack I use as a carry on and carry it on my front....like Sarah Silverman here.
Then get packing cubes LINK. These keep your clothes organized and make it super easy to pull things out of your backpack.

Far from stupid. I wrote in mine every day except for the last 2. It was definitely a pain at times, but having it is priceless. I read through it one night with a glass of bourbon and couldn't believe all the little things I forgot. Also had a piece of paper that myself and a deaf kid from NYC used to communicate. It was pretty cool.

It's pricey for a backpack but after using the Osprey Atmos 65 AG on my last trip through Europe I'll never bring a suitcase again. I had about 35lbs worth of stuff in there and it felt empty.

that is too bit. you really only need the osprey 48 if you are bringing a backpack

I already had it from backpacking in Costa Rica but I still like the size. It allows my wife to have a smaller bag or no bag for some trips.

I recommend a backpack small enough to fit on a flight without checking a bag.

I packed my large Dana Design internal frame. It was definitely annoyingly large. I was carrying camping gear as well which was a pain in the arse because I hardly used it prior to getting to Greece. France and Italy weren't real camping friendly.
