My parents just did Viking Berlin/Prague, they enjoyed it. Not sure how old you are, but they said its all old folks. They said there was one young couple(in their 40s) on the boat.

There’s been a couple threads on these. What exactly are you looking to see and do? There’s quite a few options.

I have some friends that cruise that involved biking during the day, I can’t think of the name right now. Basically every morning they stop and let you off, the boat goes to the next stop, and you bike through the country side to the boat. I always thought that sounded awesome. They did 20-40 km’s a day.

My parents just got back from the Danube cruise.
The only issue they had was the water level in the river prevented the ship from being able to cruise the whole itinerary. They had to bus them from where they arrived to where the river was high enough to cruise out of and the cruise part ended early due to that.

They had planned it a year in advance so not much you can do but they still had a good time.

You might still be a young one. My parents are in their upper 70s and they said they were even the younger of the old folks. But again they really enjoyed it. Excursions were great for them. Although several people in the group got pick pocketed or robbed in Prague.

we did viking Soane River cruise. Fantastic food and wine. Average age on barge was 70. A few people brought bikes and met the barge at next port that night. Ama is decent too. In particular, regarding the food, we would see the chef at the local markets buying fresh provisions every day.

We did the Romantic Danube with Viking last November. Spent a few days in Prague before the cruise. And a couple of days on the back-end staying in Budapest.

Highly recommend. Great value.

AND..

I'll add that if you can time it around late November/December when the Christmas markets open up, it's MAGICAL! The Missus just thoroughly "jones" on going to Christmas markets. Shopping. Eating. Drinking. Once in a lifetime experience.

5 years ago I did multi-generational trip my wife (early 50's) parents, in-laws (mid to late 70's), and kids (17 & 19) on Viking over Christmas week. Romantic Danube, but reverse from Nole Man. Spent a couple days before departure in Budapest and then 3 days after in Prague for New Years.

It was a great trip. There are only 198 guests. Crew was amazing. Everyone knows your name. Minimal packing/unpacking. Good food, great beer/wine/cocktails. Wake up in a new town everyday. Some smaller places that I probably would have never gone to otherwise, but each interesting. Fun guides, good tours. We didn't have any issues with water levels. Going through the locks is really cool, especially if you are into engineering.

My 17 yo was the youngest, but several other similar families were on board. There was probably about a dozen under 24 year olds that hung out late in the piano bar every night. That may have been due to it being a holiday. On our trip, it skewed older however, it was definitely a mix of ages, except for young kids.

My kids enjoyed it and continue to talk about it. Traveling overnight while sleeping saves so much time that you would otherwise lose. The one disadvantage is not experiencing local restaurants for dinner. The advantage was that with a group of eight, there was no argument over where to go.

I would recommend Viking and have heard good thing about AMA as well.

I'd echo what rsb831 said, on either cruise lines. I have a friend that books tours and he actually likes AMA better. I have no experience with them. But I do love Viking!

What I would add is the incredible value you get with Viking. They book early and and in advance for the popular routes, so keep an eye out. But what I find incredible are the deals if you can take advantage of them. 2 for 1 air fare is an example. Credits if you refer a friend. Future trip credits for your next trip. They keep throwing deals out there to a point where it's dirt cheap comparatively to get to Europe. And once you're there, it's cheap to get around by train, private car, air etc.

One caveat as noted (and this just happened to a friend that got back a few weeks ago): You are at the mercy of the weather and it is possible parts of a river might be too shallow to traverse certain times of the year. It does happen, albeit not that frequently, and you can't predict it, but they're very accommodating if it does apparently and YOU'RE IN EUROPE!!

We're doing the Danube trip in April that starts in Bucharest Romania. We'll be taking a week early to go the Transylvania Region.

Can't wait.

My wife and I did the Viking Rhine cruise from Basel to Amsterdam a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. We were in our late 50’s and definitely on the younger end of the age spectrum though. We made some good friends on that trip that we still visit with.

The River cruise was the most disappointing of all the cruises I’ve been on. Fav was Rome to Venice with 4 Greek Isle stops ,Turkey ,Naples, and Malta. Aboard Celebrity Constellation
