We are a family of 4. Kids are ages (11,13) We are looking for places to stop driving from Boston to Camden, Maine. I was planning on leaving early 7:30 am and slowly making my way up the coast? Should I stay on Hwy 1 the entire time or should I use the interstate. Check in at our AirbNb is not until 4:00 p.m.
Thanks
Thanks

I'm not experienced enough in that area, but I assume Portland, ME will pop up as a suggestion. I'm sure somebody will give ideas there.

You have Salem, which is just north of Boston, with all of the witch trials. Portsmouth, NH has several places to visit. They have an 'old town' near the harbor. Both places can be enjoyable, informative stops for a family. If you are killing time before your bnb is available, these are a few places to see that take a couple of hours or so apiece.
These recommendation are made with the notion that all the family are not of drinking age or your family is keen into hiking. Otherwise the coast road has a number of sights along the way.

Portsmouth NH is a cool old downtown part right on the water. Portland has a lot of newer stuff. Lots of hipsters stuff. Red’s Eats in Wiscasset, Portland Head light is very famous in Portland. Nubble Light is very nice near the NH border of Maine. Lots of lighthouses on the way to check out. Camden is great. Stayed there for a week about 4 years ago. Sailing trip from the harbor is nice. Enjoy! Beautiful state.

We are staying near the Portland Maine /Scarborough area our first night to break the driving up near Old Orchard beach. Little place called the Edgewater (130/nt) right on the beach. Also the Portland head lighthouse is nearby. Looks really cool. May want to give that a try.

what day of the week are you driving? If it’s a Friday you’re gonna be in traffic most of the way

I also recall a cool restaurant South of the Portland Head light with lobster rolls right on the water. Picnic tables overlooking the ocean. Right next to the twin sisters lighthouses as I recall. Beautiful place to eat lunch.

Sorry, I had to look it up on Google Maps. Good aerial view of it. It’s at Two Lights State Park. Google maps satellite view shows it well.

And I just noticed someone got it for me. Thanks! I will say it is not as good as Red’s Eats, but still worth the effort especially for the location and setting.

Good point. Lobster Shack was closed last mid-October.
