Wife and I are thinking of taking a short notice trip to Lewis Smith lake next week. There are plenty of Arbnb houses available in various parts of the lake with boat ramps on property. We are planning to bring our skis with us (Yamaha FZR’s if interested). We know nothing about the area. Traveling from Pensacola to get away from the crazy beach and water scene right now.

If there is anyone who lives in area or knows anything about the area on this site, you’re advice will be appreciated. We are mid 50’s and like evenings in outdoor restaurant/bar setting so we can hang out with mix of locals amd others from OOT

A buddy of mine owns this company Smith Lake Rentals

Jeff will have the info that you need.

Smith Lake is one of the two party lakes in Alabama. Plan on a bunch of traffic consisting of wake boats, ski boats, and pontoons. The lake is very deep and very clear.

Smith lake is very narrow and will have a lot of traffic. Lake Martin will have a lot of traffic but a lot wider. I believe lake Martin has more and better restaurants on it.

Thanks to both of you! We will look into both options. Will definitely take pics and report back. Right now 80% going. Any other suggestions will be appreciated!

I grew up on that lake and I've been on Lake Martin many times. Of the two, Smith is much prettier. There will be considerable boat traffic on the weekends, but few boats thru the week. All of Smith is in dry counties. Unless they've changed the laws, alcohol is not permitted on boats. Restaurant/bars are very hard to come by, on Smith Lake. I'm not sure if there are any that serve alcohol. If this is a deal breaker, you will hate Smith Lake. There really isn't any night life, to speak of. The closets towns that have that, are Cullman and Jasper. I do not recommend either, unless you want to have your own Patrick Swayze "Roadhouse" experience.

Just got back from a three day rental on Smith Lake. Also have lots of friends who have places there so go up a fair amount.

Greygoose gives a good summary. No nightlife to speak of. Restaurant at Trident Marina and they do live music on Saturdays. But there is very little outdoor restaurant/bar setting. Pretty much none.

Three new lake patrol boats this year and word is that they’ve been very aggressive. It is a dry lake so even unopened beer is a ticket.

Lake Martin would be a shorter drive and have better restaurants etc. Another option that is similar to the 2 would be Tim's Ford in South Tenn. Restaurants etc and not dry like Smith. Jack Daniels distillery and Dickel are close by for a day trip. Lynchburg in general is a nice little town to explore.

Not a fan of Jasper, but they do have a couple of decent restaurants downtown. Black Rock is really good. And Warehouse 319 is decent if you're looking for more of a bar atmosphere. Neither are really worth the drive from Smith Lake though, unless you just really need to get away.

We've been going there for at least 10 years. We go with my wife's family. My father-in-law has been booking through Jeff most of that time.

We don't go out much. We mainly take turns cooking at the house. Its beautiful out there. During the week there isn't a lot of traffic on the lake which is nice.
