I've lived in Italy the last three years. You can easily get cash from an ATM. Make sure to decline the conversion the atm wants to do for you. It's a way of making money off of tourist. For example, you take out 300 euro, the atm asks to convert for you at a fee of 40 euro. Nope, decline, your bank will do it for 5 or 10 dollars. And you'll still get the euro even if you decline the conversion. Took me 4 months to figure out and probably 3 or 400 dollars ??

It really is, it's a beautiful area. I much prefer the smaller towns over the tourist cities. You get the real Italian experience, and eat amazing food that wasn't prepared for tourists.

Vicenza is a 6 euro train away from Verona and Venice, and just south of the mountains. Verona might be the most beautiful city, especially the walk along the river.

It sure is amazeballs how I took out less than 100 Euro a month in cash when I was there for four months. And none of it taken out in the US. Get some travelers checks at AMEX before you leave, and stuff them in your socks for safekeeping before you go, y'all.

I haven't tipped one Euro. Tried to at the first place we ate Saturday night. Bill was 175 Euro, I tried to give him 20 Euros and he wouldn't have any of it. He told me if anyone in Italy asked me to tip or accepted a tip that they weren't truly Italian.

Getting cash out of an ATM has been next to impossible. I swear my local bank has the security of fort Knox. It took me getting in contact with the manager at our local branch and she finally removed the hold that was causing the issue. I had tried 6 different ATM and was getting declined every time. I had put a travel notice on my account before we left and the card worked to tap anywhere but I couldn't get cash.. Apparently the travel notice doesn't work for cash withdrawals. This is the same bank that will decline my card if I try and get gas in Texarkana, Texas, I live 50 miles from there, until I respond to the "was this you" text. I probably get 20-25 fraud warning texts from them a month, and they're all legitimate charges.

He's right, in the tourist areas they expect a tip. But outside of that, no. If you do, they really appreciate it. But don't expect the same service you'll get in the US. The Italians move at a much slower pace, a dinner can't take a couple hours, which is normal for here. I think it's because of the taxes they have to pay back to the government, 22%. So if you pay in cash they really appreciate it, and may give you a discount.

Just have to let your bank know beforehand that you are traveling, should be ok then.

We got back last month from two weeks in Italy. Venice was interesting but packed with people and hot! Really enjoyed Doge palace. We used very little cash mostly card. Just get from ATM as needed. Also make sure when using card to do in Euros.

USAA removed the ability to add travel warnings from their website, as did Chase. So what happened when I tried to check in at a hotel in the UK? USAA declined, with the physical card, Chase processed fine. However, I then used my USAA debit card at a convenience store or a Gregg's 15 minutes later using Apple Pay, and it was fine.
I'd prefer they'd have just left the travel notification tool in place.

Use a bank ATM for your cash needs.

We just got back from IT.. we needed cash for some tips for tour guides, gas stations that didnt refused our credit cards, coins for some public toilets...

They take VISA and MC, not AMEX over there in case that matters.
