Anyone ever been to both? What did you like more? TIA!

Went to lake Garda and cinque. Would choose cinque all day. More to do, beaches, hiking, great food. We stayed in Vernazza. Can hike, take a boat, or a train to other towns.

I've only been to Lake Como - but the wife has been to both. She preferred Lake Como; we stayed in Varenna. I don't think you can go wrong either way though.

Been to both.. Would return to both, but would go back to Cinque Terre first. Spent five days there and hated to leave.

I have been to both. Both are spectacular. I would recommend them highly. We did the CT as a day trip from Tuscany but we did a lot of hiking and went to all 5 villages. Our favorite was Vernazza. Wonderful views of the Mediterranean with the other towns in the distance. Lake Como is also very nice. We spent time there while staying in Lugano, Switzerland which is a short distance away on the next lake over. If you are looking for a nice hotel on Lake Como, check out the Hotel Florence in Bellagio.

Bumping because I said I would.
So my (now) fiance and I just got back from a 13 day trip to Italy. Flew into Milan, did a day in Lake Como, then to Venice, then Florence, did a day in Tuscany and a day in Cinque Terre, then to Rome where we flew out.
Regarding Lake Como vs. Cinque Terre - still a tough call.
Lake Como:
- We did a private tour ( Valtellina Day Trip) and it was the highlight of our trip. Possibly because I proposed to my girlfriend at the end of the day in Varenna...but also because the tour was that good. Started out in Varenna (train fare to Varenna and back to Milan is covered in price) where we met up with our guide. We sat down and went over the day, then drove down into the center of Varenna. We walked around and saw the town then headed up into the mountains. Stopped at an agriturismo for a cheese tour and lunch and took in the sights from the valley. Then headed back into the mountains to see the terraced vineyards and ultimately stopped at a winery to get a tour and do a wine tasting. The owners just so happened to be in, so our guide brought them out to meet us and share a glass of wine. One of the owners gave us a bottle as a gift in addition to the two we bought. We then headed back down to drive through a few other towns - made a stop in one (I forget the name) to see an old grocery store that has been there since the 1800's with little changed. They are famous for their wine/cheese cellars below the store (see pictures below). After that we headed back to Varenna to wind down the day and ultimately head back to Milan...and somewhere between that I popped the question
The tour truly is phenomenal though, I highly recommend anyone travelling in the area to book it. It's a steal at the price.
Sorry for the length, had a lot to say and show - and that's the condensed version. Cinque Terre post to follow

Cinque Terre:
- I think this was the runner up vs. our Lake Como excursion, but there were some extenuating circumstances surrounding that. We did a day trip by ourselves to CQ. We took the train from Florence to La Spezia, then the regional rail to Monterosso. Hiked what we though was the blue trail between Monterosso and Vernazza, but fairly certain we got routed to the red/white trail (tougher). We were so whooped we sat and got lunch and a bottle of wine in Vernazza and decided we'd skip the Vernazza - Corniglia and Corniglia - Manarola trails. Though I think the Corniglia - Manarola blue trail is closed as is the Manarole - Riomaggiore blue trail. To save some time we also skipped Corniglia and Riomaggiore. We took the train from Vernazza to Manarola and killed the rest of our day being lazy in Manarola before heading back to Florence around 7 or 8 pm. It was an awesome experience, but honestly...if you can't hike, there isn't a whole lot else to do there besides eat and drink. Definitely a place to go and take it slow, assuming you have the time. Would still recommend everyone to visit, it's always been on my bucket list.
