Have a tripped planned for Key West in 10 days for a long weekend, from my understanding south Florida is in lock down. Should I cancel this trip or enjoy what I can do there?

I know several people there who are having a good time. Looks to be fine food and drink wise. And not crowded at all.

Plenty of outdoor activities.

At least it won’t be overrun with cruise ship passengers. They have almost ruined KW for me

Bars are closed in Florida right now, right?

Not really. Only bars that serve basically no food, which is pretty rare. I don't know about KW, but its mostly night clubs and that sort of thing. Most have by now adjusted to be legit under current social distancing rules.

I'd go OP. South Florida is by no means on lock down. Miami closed their beaches only through July 7. Then are opening up again last I've seen.

The reality is that life is going to be like this for at least 6 more months most likely. You either go and make the best of it, or sit home for a long time.

Just got back from Naples Florida. Everything is open except the drinking only bars. You'll need to wear masks if you go shopping.

The situation in Florida is rapidly evolving. Many hospitals are nearing capacity in their ICU’s. Today the Governor extended the State of Emergency Order until September. Several Counties have mandatory mask orders. There are many who expect new mandatory masking and restaurant indoor/outdoor seating closures in the coming days.

The Miami/Dade area returns to full lockdown tomorrow with no restaurant seating (to go only), no gyms, no bars, mandatory masks and instructed all vacation rentals to shut down until further notice.

IMHO, it’s unlikely that there will be a larger scale shutdown because Governor DeSantis has at this point shown no willingness to make sweeping decisions instead leaving it to local municipalities.

Tourism has obviously been hit really hard; so I’m sure the Keys would love to see you. Many businesses are open; however, they’ve taken a hard line on masking. If you are outside of your home or car you are expected to be wearing a mask in Key West. Numerous sources are reporting stiff fines for non-compliance.

EDIT: The Mayor of Miami/Dade has changed the order issued just yesterday. Outdoor dining allowed, bars closed, gyms open only if patrons wear masks.

I'll be there next week. Boss is there right now. He said the scare tactics stop once you get downtown, that the majority of the businesses he's been to are happy to have customers. Wear a mask and you'll be fine.

the only thing i've seen rumored is another shutdown of the highway to get in, so hopefully you're flying.

Am on a flight now to Key West. Hoping that what the poster above said is true.

Of course the Key West Reddit and ant search on twitter for information would make you think it’s a war zone of sorts. Hoping it’s a solid weekend. Will report back.

Why should he? It would be ridiculous for places like Franklin County in the florida panhandle and many of the interior counties with no tourism and almost no cases to close restaurants down. Its almost a 15 hour drive from Pensacola to Key West, there's no reason to treat the entire state the same. Our situation in the Florida Panhandle should not be handled like Tampa and Miami should.

ETA: The reality is this is how travel will be for the next 6 months. Its going to be questionable, we need to just accept that and move on. Make the best of what we can.

We leave for KW Sunday. If you see a tall guy with a grateful dead mask and a smoking hot brunette, that's us. Ya'll better say hello

So I got here last night.

It seems pretty crowded. Basically if you’re under a roof and standing up you need to have a mask on. Code enforcement has been finding businesses for non-compliance so they’re pretty strict.

However, once you sit at your table to eat or drink it’s just like normal. Also you don’t have to have your mask on when you’re just walking down the street (like Duval, etc.) - basically just throw the mask on when you walk up to the hostesses stand and while walking to your table and then take it off.

We went parasailing, jet ski, and snorkeling today and no mask required once you left the marina. It’s definitely not enough of a hassle to make your vacation a bummer. And, if anything it’s less crowded than usual so it’s nice.

There is talk of them putting the checkpoint back up due to a rise in cases but we’ll see. Overall things here seem no different than where I live in Greenville, SC as far as the mask requirement goes. A few of the spots are closed like Sloppy Joes but overall it’s a good time. Just be open minded, follow the rules, and don’t be an a-hole and y’all will have a good time.

FWIW I hate wearing the mask, but I’m also down to follow whatever rules are asked of me in order to have a good time. It’s not a big deal at all. Enjoy y’all.

Just the silliest thing I ever heard, what good does wearing a mask entering a business/restaurant, etc but then you get to take it off the rest of the time... then you put it on the table or your pocket and it becomes contaminated.... just asinine that politicians think that does anything worth a shite

Not sure but it’s the rule here and it’s very easy to follow..so just do it. Because I’ve seen code enforcement in several businesses and it’s not worth risking their livelihood so you can try to stick it to the government.

I’m a medical provider, wear a mask for 13 hours a day, that’s why it makes no sense to me... wearing one into a business but then being able to take it off does no good for anyone

I absolutely agree with you. Wife is an ICU nurse who worked in COVID ICU in Chicago. Legit makes zero sense but it’s the rule here and is enforced.

Are you enjoying your trip otherwise??

We're thinking of going later on in August or maybe September ... if there are no storms heading that way or no major shut down.

Thx
