Jost Van Dyke

I’m considering staying on Jost Van Dyke. I’ve found a group of villas overlooking White Bat and Great Harbour Bay. Has anyone stayed in a Villa in this area? It looks like a climb up and down a steep winding road from any of the villas. Do most people walk these roads? Do you rent the chairs at the beach bars? I’m trying to gauge how much my wife will be willing to do LOL. We’re typically chill at a resort on the beach people. The less work, the better.

Just got back from St. Thomas a few weeks ago & we took a boat ride to Jost Van Dyke & spent an afternoon there & it was packed. Had a blast. Great people watching. Ate & drank at the Soggy Dollar Bar. The gift shop is bigger than the actual bar.
Not sure I would want to go through flying into another island like St Thomas & having to boat to this island with all my luggage as that would be a lot of work & time. It’s 15 miles from St Thomas. I think you are better off staying at a resort on St Thomas or St John & just doing a day boat trip. You need your passport for BVI.
FYI- Epstein Island is off the southeast coast of St Thomas & our boat went right by it.
Not sure I would want to go through flying into another island like St Thomas & having to boat to this island with all my luggage as that would be a lot of work & time. It’s 15 miles from St Thomas. Thanks for your input. Every time someone posts about the Virgin Islands there’s always a few folks that say you would regret not staying on JVD. That’s when I became interested. Your points are valid and it’s more work than the average resort stay.

Fly into Tortola, take 20 minute ferry to Jost. I've never stayed on the island just been a few times on a catamaran.

About 12 of us just did this trip in March. 6 adults and 6 kids. We stayed down near the beach on White Bay, near Ivans Stress Free bar and Alice's restaurant. We never walked the roads, but got rides with the taxi trucks whenever we needed them. I'm sure your villa can help get you in contact with them. I'm sure you can walk the main roads, but they are steep, and the drivers like to drive fast... lol
The beach at White Bay is very walkable from Alices to the west end. There's a rock area you have to climb over in the middle, but super easy. Kids loved it. I don't recall having to rent any chairs. Plenty of food and drink options on this beach.
We had a blast, rented dinghy's for 3 days to tool around to Sandy Spit and Little JVD. Then did charter trips for 2 days (went to Normal Island one day, and virgin gorda the other).
We flew into St Thomas, stayed a night there, then arranged a private ferry to JVD. It takes some time and effort to get to JVD, but it is a great place to visit. And the water is gorgeous. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

As for the villas on the hill between White Bay and Great Harbor, most people catch one of the many taxis (think pickup truck with bench seating in back) to take them up and down the hill to either side (especially up the hill - it is pretty steep). White Bay is much prettier - this is where you would spend most of your time. Great Harbor has a few restaurants and a small grocery, but no real beach there and no good swimming.
As for beach chairs... Most of the restaurants on White Bay have plenty of chairs and umbrellas in front of their location. There is no charge to use them, but it is expected that you would buy some food or drink from them while there. The chairs are all first-come, first-serve. White Bay can get very crowded on days when a cruise ship is in port at either St Thomas or Tortola - the cruise crowds show up after 9am and are usually gone by 3pm. During those times, chairs can go quickly.
If want to stay at a place right on the beach, and that has a nice pool, check out Ivan's on White Bay.

We did the same. St Thomas, private boat, clear customs, and stayed on Tortola. Then ferry to JVD etc. Best trip I have done in a decade. Soggy Dollar is fun and you can get around to other spots by boat or cab or ferry.

Went last year to BVI but stayed on Tortola. Walked Jost from Great Harbour to East Bay and your plan is doable from what I recall.
Don't miss the Baths on Virgin Gorda. Had it all to ourselves one day, was very nice.
Flying in/out of Tortola is your best choice.

our biggest decision each time we go to St. John is how do we minimize the amount of time spent on St. Thomas.

I will also arse that my 21 year old daughter had to come a few days later due to exams and she manueved St Thomas - ferry- customs- ferry to Tortola and had no issues. It is a bit of a hassle since you want to get to relaxing, but it not hard.
