Jamaica - Montego Bay Area - Safe?

My wife and I are headed to Montego Bay in October. We are going for a destination wedding but don’t plan to stay in the same resort. Is that area safe enough to catch a cab to shuttle us between resorts? According to google it is only about a 5-7 minute drive between the resorts. I have been to Montego Bay on a cruise, and the cruise line suggested we don’t travel too far from port.

Yes. The most dangerous thing you'll encounter are the cab/van drivers. They are God damn terrifying.

If you staying at another resort to save a few bucks, those savings will evaporate quickly with the cost of cabs. They seemed to be a racket at our resort although we found great value in Jamaica overall.

Any particular reason for this?
My wife and I stayed at Couples Swept Away in Negril but flew into Montego Bay. The cab ride to and from the airport was terrifying to say the least.

Stayed at an Air BnB gated condo last summer across from where the cruise boats dock. Never had any problems. It's tourist destination so they keep it safe. The condo had a deal to use one of the resorts beaches & we would walk back & forth with no issues.

It’s fine. Stop being afraid of black people.

I've been to Montego Bay twice. Quite a few resorts are east of Montego Bay and you will not have issue driving between them.
Montego Bay, itself, does have a high-rate of violent crimes, but I never felt unsafe bopping around during the day. There are a few neighborhoods away from the water that you'll want to avoid, but I don't know why you would venture there, anyway.

The "crime" rate in Jamaica is totally overblown and inflated because Kingston is a shite hole.
The main problem with Jamaica is the parasitic relationship the locals have with tourists in heavy tourism areas. The best job most of them can get is hoping a tourist is going to kick them down a few bucks for some trinket, so they hassle the shite out of people. Of course, most of the resorts have recognized that tourists are annoyed by the constant hustle and keep the vendors at bay, maybe letting a few sanitized vendors in close to the resort or beach to politely offer to sell stuff.
When you get away from the tourist areas and into the Jamaican countryside, the island really has a different personality. Very chill. Very cool with great hospitality. As Jamaicans I met in the countryside would say, "Everything I need to eat can be picked off the plants in my yard, any man who go hungry in Jamaica is a lazy fool." People live pretty subsistence lives in the country, but they don't depend on tourists to survive like people do in the city.
Of course, most tourists aren't ever really going to experience that side of Jamaica because it's not what's traditionally marketed to us.

My wife and I went to Montego Bay last August and stayed in the resort most of the time. Our butler tried to sell us cocaine, but I never felt "unsafe" even when we left the resort for a couple of days.

Jamaica is awesome. People there are great. Don’t act like a dick and they will treat you great. Most of them have a good sense of humor and actually love American culture. When you visit New York you have neighborhoods you avoid. Jamaica is no different. Be smart and you’re fine.

Never been to Jamaica but i do know that if you do rent a car (or plan to) there don't assume your visa/mc have coverage. Ireland Jamaica and Isreal were excluded.

Just got back today from my 12th trip to Jamaica. Spent 3 nights in Negril and 9 nights in Treasure Beach. I wish I could’ve stayed another week on the South Coast. The violence, where it’s occurring, is about gangs and drugs and family feuds, not tourists so yeah you’ll be fine.

Awesome that you went to Treasure Beach. My wife and I did our honeymoon there. Ital Rest and Jake’s. TB is the “real” Jamaica.

I'm glad you got to go. I always have a great time. It's definitely away from the hustle and bustle. We've got a group of people who go around the same time every year and stay at a few different places in the Frenchman's Bay area. The guest house I stay at is about a 10 minute walk to Jake's. We've made some good friends over the years, both other tourists and locals.

Went to Runaway Bay (Breezes) back in 2000. Don't know much about it since then. The resort was great. Lots of planned activities and available off site trips. Not as many dinner options as we would have liked but good food and good service. The golf course was well maintained and the caddies had everything you need to enjoy your round. (emphasis on everything, mon.)

If in Negril, go to Rick's Cafe....stay for the sunset.

Half Moon and Round Hill are where it's at.
