Itinerary changes international flights

I’ve noticed more and more in the last few years that there are frequent major itinerary changes for our international flights. The most recent of which required a call and rebook because we wouldn’t make the connection. This is the 4th itinerary change since booking 3 months ago. Any of you travel pros have tips for avoiding this in trips going forward? Is there a timeframe in which they stop the major flight changes prior to trip? I assume they open lots of flight times and then consolidate flights leading up to the date. Just curious if there is a way to avoid this to stop the time consuming calls to airline. (Tried to rebook online it was not an option).

Its happened to me a few times, especially if I book 6 months out or so. But I've never had it cut a connection too short.
What airline are you flying?

Lufthansa. It’s frustrating when you choose an itinerary based on time of arrival and total travel time and it gets all mixed up. I don’t know if it’s because there are other operating carriers (United and Sun express) on the itinerary and too many moving parts but it was a mess.

Left me stranded in Munich after an itinerary change last week. Flew them 4 times in the past year. Every single flight was delayed. Fortunately; only stranded once.

I have a Delta trip that I booked 5 months out. Fly in 2 weeks. Bought with points. They have made seven or eight changes now. Craziest part. This last change was a change BACK TO MY ORIGINAL FLIGHTS and they informed me this "new" booking is cheaper. They just redeposited 15,000 miles into my account. LoL.

I’ve had this happen quite a few times on major international flights. My strategy is that I book flight separately. For instance I usually Fly out of Newark on international flights so I fly there a day or two before my international flight and I stay there a day or two when I return to the US. I try and avoid same day connections when I fly internationally or coast to coast.
