I know this is a highly discussed vacation destination but i've checked old threads and dont see answers to my question.

My wife and I and 2-3 other couples plan on going to Isla next summer. We need advice on what accommodations we should be looking for.

We're trying to decide between a place on North Beach with no All Inclusive or renting a house on the middle part of the island that on the Caribbean with its own pool.

It looks like we can get a pretty nice house for roughly $100-$150 per couple per night. But is it worth it if we're going to have to rent golf carts for the entire week to get places and if we're never gonna be there?

Just wondering what recs some of the Isla Mujeres veterans have.

I went for the first time in June and am already in the process of planning a trip back for spring 2019. We stayed on the south end of the island and that is where we will stay when we return. Much of our enjoyment of the trip was the daily golf cart commute to the north side of the island. I would have no issues staying mid-island, either, but I don't think we have much interest in staying on the north end. We enjoyed hanging out some and dining on the north side, but it was really nice going back to the quieter side of the island each evening.
If you can work it financially, I recommend renting a golf cart for the entirety of your stay and just commuting. We loved driving the cart all over the island. I'd trade amenities in lodging for the cart rental.

I would stay in the Playa Norte area. You can walk to everything. If you get a house elsewhere you're going to need golf carts for every day which eats up $45-$50 a day per cart.

If you stay in Playa Norte you only get a golf cart if you want to go out and explore on your own for a day. A taxi ride anywhere on the island is $5.

driving around drunk on a golf cart is a feature, not a bug

I don't do AI. We stay at Hotel Secreto.

They offer superb service in a private setting that is a few minutes walk from Playa Norte or Hidalgo Street. We've stayed there enough times that the staff has become friends and bends over backwards to make sure we're happy. For instance, Victor will ask us what we want for lunch and get on his scooter and go pick it up and serve it to us. He can also suggest local food and will go get that as well.

I would also like some advice. We are going as a family in June, with my wife and two daughters. Looking for either a hotel with 2 bedrooms, or a house. Could someone give me some suggestions. Will be there a week. Any help would be appreciated.

I looked into na balam but it looks like they aren’t doing any bookings last September so I can figure out pricing or if they’ll even be open next summer

Last year we stayed at Nautibeach in a condo. 2 couples and it was great.
Definitely get a golf cart a couple days and make the ride around the island. Plenty of cool little bars and such.
If your riding around and see a bunch of carts somewhere, it's probably a good place to eat or drink.

Really don't remember many of the food places by name. Pretty sure Mango Cafe was one and it was really good.It was Mid Island across from a church. BTW, walk to the church and look out the back window, absolutely stunning view.
Also ate somewhere on the main street that had a Lobster Burrito that was really good, sorry don't remember the name. Plenty of cool places to stop and check out.

Stayed at Privileges in June. I really enjoyed their service on the beach. Close to everything and reasonably priced. Also within walking distance a plenty of excellent eateries. The golf cart is fun but the natives do drive kinda of fast for such a small island so be careful. It was safe with some common sense. I don't think you can go wrong on what part of the island. If you want to be a beach bum then the North side is best though. I'd go back for sure.

Dopi's has the lobster burrito. It's great. Get Luis as your server if he's working.

The first time we went to Isla we rented the house next to the church across the street from Mango Cafe. I thought Mango Cafe was just ok but a lot of people love it.

Bars and restaurants to hit. Nash's on Hidalgo Street if you want to watch a game. The Joint down by Punta Sur for breakfast mojitos and all around good food. Veracruz for Cuban (not authentic but good food) and mojitos with Cuban rum. Soggy Peso on Thursday for a burger and the strongest margaritas on the island. Fredy's on Hidalgo for arrachera and of course Bastos for the best arrachera.

ETA: A lot of people swear by Ballyhoo for seafood but personally I've had better. However, if you fish they're happy to cook your catch for you.

I just got back from Isla a few weeks ago and second staying in the Playa Norte area. If you want to go to the middle or south side of the island, taxis are cheap and plentiful. I was traveling solo and didn’t see the need to rent a golf cart.

Have not been in a while .. real taxis now - lol .
Went for about 10 years almost in a row.
I would definitely stay toward the North / North West part of the island.

I wouldn't call them real taxis. The nice thing is that a cab ride anywhere on the island is $5. It was $4 until three years ago.
