I'm looking at flights this afternoon and the most cost effective one has a short 40 min layover in Atlanta. What's the boards experience with this? Will this leave me enough time? It's a domestic flight with Delta.

Yes, more than enough time assuming there's no de-icing or weather issues. What time of the day is this connection: morning, afternoon or evening? Even if you get in 20 min late you can still likely run, catch the train and make it to the next flight

What about in LAX? I have a 40 min layover in LAX with delta to get to Maui in 3weeks.

Flights that late always get delayed. So you better hope your connecting flight isnt delayed less than your first flight.

Also sometimes if an airline sees youll be delayed, they will rebook you automatically

I don't mind a 40 minute connection through Atlanta as long as it is in the morning. Usually there is a safety factor built into the Atlanta arrival times and flights get there early if the weather is good. If the weather is bad then things can be a nightmare. Afternoon storms would concern me with a 40 minute connection. More so in the summer than the winter.

It can be long. Couple years ago, I had a layover in Denver and just stayed on the plane but the doors were kept open and it was 3 degrees outside. That 45 minutes felt like 3 hours.

Cutting it a bit close but you should be OK, remember that 40 min is arrival to departure not deplaning to boarding, you really have about 25- 30 min from the time you deplane till they close the door on your departing flight.

are they in the same terminal?

We did a 40 minute layover at IAH in a different terminal and got there with 20 minutes to spare one morning... Just do your research on how to get to where you're supposed to go when you exit the plane... If it's a morning flight and your first plane leaves on time, you should have no problem... I'd be a little more worried about delays as it got later in the day, but it always seems to work itself out somehow for me.

Atlanta is the only airport in the country that a 40 minute layover ever gives me cause for concern.

It's doable, but better not stop to pee if your connection is 3 terminals away in Atlanta.

Don't see where you're coming from on this. Previous poster makes good point. The train in Atlanta is super quick even if crowded. You can easily cross 3-4 terminals in ATL in 10 minutes no problem. Skytrain/tram whatever in Dallas takes 4x as long. IAH/LAX both way longer to change terminals.

Good luck. As noted, you should be fine. I'm a little cautious in this regard. 40 would be pushing it for me based on time of day and destination/importance of making the connection. 40 should be fine unless you have a delay in your first flight. That's the risk I think is that you aren't leaving yourself with much if any cushion if something goes wrong.

My thoughts exactly. I've endured many an 8-10 minute wait for a women's restroom in busy terminals. I'd hoof it to the connection terminal/gate, then hit the restroom line. (I hate plane restrooms.)

LAX has two Terminals you have to walk from one to the other. One is Domestic only and the other is International. You need some time there.

Made it with a good 20 minutes to spare. I wasn't assigned a seat either and was first in line to get a seat assignment.
