Hurricane Ida- MSY Waivers to Sept 12 for Delta/AA/UA, October 2 for Southwest

Posted on 8/26/21 at 8:57 pm
Wanted to start this thread for anyone traveling this coming weekend or next week. Definitely keeping an eye on hurricane ida as it's now a category 4 hurricane. This is going to be a mess with a ton of airport closures, please stay safe everyone. If you have any issues or specific flight concerns, please post here and myself/the board will do our best to help .
As of Thursday 9/2 10:15pm CT, all airlines have waivers up through 9/12. Southwest has their waiver now extended through October 2nd and cancelled flights through Thursday 9/2 evening. They updated their schedule through 9/19 and drastically reduced flight schedules. Also finally posted an operations waiver that anyone flying into MSY can fly into Houston, Pensacola, or Jackson for free. American hasn't operated anything but also added a New Orleans waiver through 9/12. Delta operated 3 revenue flights today and is expected to operate additional flights tomorrow (Friday). Several posters on here confirmed AC and bathrooms at the Nola airport.

I have a flight from MSY to DEN on Thursday. That should be ok by then, right?

Leave for Boston this weekend. Was going to park at us park lot but with hurricane should I park in garage lot at msy?

What are the chances DL2082 takes off as planned Sunday morning? In Detroit for a wedding but need to get back to wife and daughter in NOLA. Was originally flying out at 8:30PM but changed to the early flight thinking that’d be good before the track spee up so I burned my free change.

What are the chances that MSY is open Thursday?
I have to assume with a Sunday night/Monday morning landfall, by Thursday things should be up and running

My worry about my flight Wednesday is the flooding. It rained a ton yesterday and has been raining all morning, if we get the 10-15 inches they are predicting that water won’t have anywhere to go. Also I worry about workers getting to the airport.

Yeah I’m coming back Wednesday as well. Hopefully it moves or weakens

I’m scheduled to fly back into NOLA from DEN on Sunday afternoon. Obviously doubt that will happen, but what am I looking at regarding how/when I can get back home? Like when should flights resume service and will I be rebooked or will I need to do this myself?
This is my first time away from home base via flight in a few years and have never had planned air travel during a storm. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Flying to Italy, out of MSY on Wednesday at about noon. Live in BR... Already pushed travel dates back once due to COVID. God doesn't want me to go on this trip.
Hoping the house is fine, and the airport is open by then, but it might be a day before call.

In theory yes but it depends how much damage Ida does

Always park in a garage, why leave the vehicle out in the open?

Delta does have a waiver up so try to get in on Saturday if you want to get home otherwise you should wait until the storm is past

How long was MSY closed after Katrina? Based on the current path things really dont look great for most of south LA and my big worry would be a loss of power/debris. Takes a lot of juice to operate an airport

Welcome to your first IRROP (irregular operation) as the airlines call it. Your flight is going to get cancelled, the question now is do you want to get home before the storm or after? We can try and get you back tomorrow if you want otherwise plan on at least 2-3 days for an airport closure if the storm is truly that bad.
Are you on vacation or are you with family/have a place to stay? If you have a place to stay, I'd suggest rebooking for late next week to be on the safe side. Everyone will be trying to get on the first flight back and I guarantee you the airport will not be operating under normal speeds.

Sorry man. The best case scenario is the wind and flooding don't mess the airport up too bad and that it's able to reopen come Monday or Tuesday but I wouldn't trust that. Definitely keep an eye out and when they extend the waiver dates you can try and push by a day or 2

No waivers on United yet (that I can find). They made their website a pain in the arse for finding travel waivers but this flight is bordering on one of the last potential flights to get out. I wouldnt be surprised to see it cancelled but there's a chance it goes. Definitely keep an eye on it. Any chance you can fly saturday night? There's a 5:48pm flight that shouldn't cancel. You could also drive to houston on sunday morning if required

Thank you!
I’m staying with friends and can stay here longer if need be. I have a class tomorrow that has been booked for a while and I don’t want to miss it. My fiancé is in NOLA and is securing our home and prepping so I’m not worried for that. I’m booked on United because they had the best flight time options home for me on Sunday.
Unless there’s anything on United flying DEN to MSY Saturday after 5….but I also don’t know if I want to put myself in that position either.

Up to you what you want to do. Personally, I haven't been through a cat 3/4 hurricane and would go as far away as I could for a few days. Given your home is secured, I'd vote to stay out west.
Now if you want to get back and help with anything down there, there is a 5:55pm DEN-MSY direct flight on United on Saturday. The waiver isn't up yet for them but I would rebook ASAP as soon as it's up whether that is for Saturday or Wednesday. With less flights operating, all that means is less inventory for rebooking

Thanks, Cuse. I’m probably going to stay out here. I can remote into work so that’s not a problem. I appreciate all you do!

Happy to help . Not sure if you'll get an email first saying that your trip is eligible for a flight change or if I'll spot the United waiver at some point today and post it here. Have family in town so will be running around after 2pm for a while

Hey cuse long time no talk. Me and my 3 year old are booked on southwest Sunday morning 7am to Dallas.
What are the chances the flight will be canceled if you have any idea?
Thanks as always
