Has anybody been lately? Will take any tips or suggestions to what to absolutely do and what to generally avoid. TIA

I will be a first time visitor for 4 days and am staying at The Fleming on the island.

Haven't been since Jan 2020, but is one of my favorite cities. Absolutely amazing.

Can get you a hand made suit dirt cheap
Go to the Peak and look out over the city
Take speedboat to Macau
Go to big budha
Go to mid-levels and drink with all the Brits
Can go to Ladies Market and buy fake goods dirt cheap
Ride their amazing subway system and just go anywhere and everywhere

If you want to get real adventurous and see what a police state looks like, take the high speed train into mainland like Guangzhou. Just make sure you have RMB to get back. The train station doesnt accept CC there.

HK is an amazing city where you will be 100% ok speaking English, however, if you cross the border further in than SZ, you are screwed.

I've wanted to go back post-covid, jsut haven't had the chance. I hear its a little different these days with China taking over, but can't imagine its that bad.

Was there is April been many times

Kowloon for shopping or seeing the masses. Great clothes over night … Sam’s Tailor in Nathan street

City is great. But changed since before China control. Still lots of people and high rises. Combo from the looks of NY and San Francisco.

Recommend a city tour. Get a hotel recommendation worth 3/4 of a day to see as much as possible.

Subway is awesome, safe and efficient

Shenzhen is China mainland across the boarder. It’s modern and clean and green. But requires a visa and Guangzhou mentioned in prior post is further. But not a lot. Both cities middle class China is actually pretty impressive.

Shenzhen is about 14 million people twice the size of New York City. In 1980s it was a guy with a mule and plow. It’s crazy.

About an hour or so via the bullet train.

That in itself is very cool. Going 200+ mph on the train is amazing.

I went to the Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for a church service when I was there. The clergy was British. The choir was Filipino. It was an amazing experience.

It's a been a minute for me, but I absolutely love HK.

Go to the Peak and look out over the city
Take speedboat to Macau
Go to mid-levels and drink with all the Brits

Definitely do all of this that Lsut81 recommended. Man, so many stories from my trips there...you will have an amazing time!

Been a decade for me.

Agree with others; HK is probably the most beautiful skyline I’ve ever seen. Book a tour, see the Buddha, etc. As others noted; if you want a suit made it’s the place to be. Great food scene too.

I personally found Macau to be a bit sketchy. Was the only time I didn’t feel safe. Perhaps it’s changed nowadays.

Parts of Kowloon can be sketchy too. Lots of pickpockets and as prostitution is legal it’s very open and in your face especially after dark.

Thanks for the info …. Reporting back on the trip.

Arrived Thursday from Koh Samui, Thailand … easy 3hr flight that put me in around 3pm. With the incredibly efficient train system, I was on the island and checked in by 4:15pm. I stayed at a boutique ish hotel called The Fleming. Had a stylish, HK Noir/nautical vibe. Comfortable and spacious, but not much of a view. A few work emails and a quick change and I was hitting the pavement by 6pm making my way over to the Central/Soho area. Walked and walked taking in the new terrain … amazing how the city flows down from the Peak with the intricate system of alleyways, stairs and streets. Found myself in a fun spot called Ho Lee Fuk …. Nice vibe and incredible service. The managers kept offering me shots — and not some lame house mix — Johnny Walkers, Tequilia, etc. Has some Char Siu Pork, Salt+Pepper squid and a stir fried green dish topped with anchovies. A great time, but a bit dizzying with all the booze. Walked back the thirty minutes to the hotel.

Friday was a mix of touristy things … the Peak Trail (amazing walk) .. some temples .. the ferry over to Kowloon for dinner (sidewalk cafe with not many tourists). Hit the Temple Street Market, which was awful really.

Saturday was a nice mix of sightseeing and shopping. Had the famed BBQ Brisket Noodles at a popular local spot by a park. Lines full of Asian customers. It was good, but not great. That night did a crawl of bars and food in SOHO/Central followed by a long walk to hotel and a nightcap in Wan Chai.

Flew back yesterday, but not before I saw more sights in the Wan Chai area and ate a decent, but not remarkable Michelin recognized Malaysian spot. And that airport is the most impressive I have ever been in.

Overall … I am very glad to squeeze this long weekend in before I finish work and return to the states. What a remarkable specimen of a city. I was a bit surprised by the density of the population —- walking the streets never felt crowded like say NYC or Bangkok. The train is the most efficient I’ve ever encountered. Prices were as expected — NY or LA level. I wish I had someone I knew there that could show me the next level stuff, but was able to canvas it well enough. A week or two would really be helpful, especially the incredible amount of high end bars/restaurants and deeper cut sites off the island. I never felt the mainland of it all and people were very friendly.

Glad you enjoyed... One thing I forgot to suggest, but you wouldn't have been able to see anyway since you were there over the weekend.

Wednesday night horse races at the track is the shite. You talk about a party
