Two different 1 week trip options:

Hawaii - Maui (3 nights) and Lanai (5 nights) in mid-August
Greece - Athens (3 nights) and Santorini (5 nights) in mid-September

1. Which trip you picking?
2. Which one is more likely to be doable given COVID?

With those dates probably Greece.

Hawaii seems dead set on committing economic suicide while Greece's country depends on tourism and they will try to do whatever they can within the EU rules to open.

Unfortunately, since the US is considered a COVID shite show, we may be down the list of countries that will be allowed in.

Been to both many, many, many times.

I’d pick Hawaii if you want beaches and Greece if you want culture/food.

For Hawaii trip, I’d increase number of days on Maui and substitute Kauai for Lanai.

For Greece trip, I’d reduce Athens by a day, Santorini by 2 days, and fit in a third island such as Mykonos or something.

Regarding Covid concerns, Greece has done a phenomenal job managing (surprisingly). Still, air travel could still be unpredictable.

This ^^^

Athens can be done in a day. Don’t stay more than two nights.

Do not back track through Athens coming from the islands. You can fly to Germany, Paris, or Amsterdam from Santorini then direct back to the States. Even if it’s just for a night, go see something else instead of heading back to Athens.

Oh, and get a place facing the sunset in Oia. Not having to deal with everyone jamming up the walk way while you have cocktails on your terrace is the way to go.

I would listen to this advice. 100% agree.

I'll endorse everything I've heard about cutting Athens short. You need one day to see the Parthenon and the Acropolis Museum, and then you can leave. The Greek islands are so much more appealing than Athens. Go see another island like Mykonos (lots of other good options as well) with those other two days.

I would say to cut a couple days off of Santorini and visit another island, but we absolutely loved Santorini and didn't want to leave. If cruises are still limited, then it could be a dream trip since cruise ships are the worst part about it.

2 days in Athens is plenty for the Acropolis and the Archeological Museum.

Santorini looks awesome, but I’ve never been.

Mykonos was cool. It felt like the Greek version of Key West. Just a laid back scenic beach town. Perfect place to unwind, drink some wine, watch the water, and eat some good food.

My favorite island no one has mentioned yet is Rhodes. It has some nice beaches with the clearest bluest water I’ve ever seen, but also a stunning Medieval town, Roman ruins in the Temple of Poseidon, and a badass crusader castle. A couple days there would be well spent.

All good suggestions, especially Athens. We did five days, which was too long. We did five days in Croatia and 13 days in Greece. Santorini was great. We had two nights there. If you are looking for somewwhere else that is close and different, Dubrovnik is awesome. Old City is really cool. It was used for Kings Landing in Game of Thrones. Very friendly people.

Coming from a former Hawaii resident I would definitely not stay on Lanai for that long unless you’re 95 and confined to a wheelchair and don’t want to do much.

If you’ve never been to Lanai and golf then I’d go for one night and golf then bounce out. IMO.

Helpful feedback everyone. Now leaning toward Greece and skipping Athens altogether and doing 3 nights in Mykonos
