Hawaii in March or May?

We are planning a trip to Oahu next year and want to either go for Mardi Gras, which is the first week in March or in late May when school lets out. Has anyone here ever been in March that can tell me how the temps and water temps are? Is it possible to swim in Waikiki in March or is it too chilly? I’m guessing the crowds will be better in March, and I’ve already checked the airfare is cheaper also.
Another option may be going the week of Easter in late April. Any input is greatly appreciated. TIA

We snorkeled and swam early February
It was fine.
First night we arrived it was breezy and needed a light jacket but was fine during days and warmed up the next day

I went in late May. The weather was gorgeous. Mid 70’s at night, low 80’s during the day.

Also, a lot of California schools don't get out until about June 6th so they won't be there yet to make things crowded.

I was on Oahu the first week of March 2023 and the weather was amazing. The whale watching was still really good as well. They were all over the place; saw at least one at every beach we visited on the eastern side of the island from Honolulu all the way up to the north shore.

Went mid-April this year.
Water was a little chilly for me, but bearable. Air weather barely got above 80 and was mostly in the 70s; and went down to high 60s/low 70s at night.
Craziest thing is how weather can be so different on the two sides of the mountains: windy, drizzly & overcast on the north/east shore, and sunny and clear on the south shore at the same time
Have fun!

Just went for Memorial Day and noticed no real difference in water tempo from out previous trips in June and April.
Water was alqways swimmable but sill cold compared to the gulf in the summer

I have visited in January and February. I was in the water practically every day.

The temps there pretty much stay in the same range year round. We went in the middle of May, and were planning on hiking Diamond Head. The locals were telling us to carry extra water because it was going to be unusually warm. I think the high was 82. I've got that by 10 AM in central Alabama.

Either is fine. March may be a little more peak touristy than May. I’ve been in February, May, December and I’m going back the last weekend of January this year. Went swimming with manta rays at night this past February and the water was fine at night. Not trying to crap on your trip, but I’d pick any other island over Oahu. Been to Maui, Kauai and the Big Island and they are so less congested than Oahu. But if you’re set on it, go and you’ll have a great trip
