We go to Islamorada every spring break. We love it. The house we rent has a beach. A lot of places don't have beaches as others have mentioned. Cheeca Lodge has a beach. Haven't stayed there in years, but we always enjoyed it.
We were supposed to go to Sunset Key Cottages first week of June. We are rescheduling because of the virus. It is right off of Key West. You have a ferry that runs to Key West all day and night. Since Key West is not my favorite place, it seemed like a good compromise with my kids that wanted something different. I have not stayed there, but a lot of people have recommended it.

Not particularly
The keys are a 180 when you have a boat. I’d recommend key west if you are staying for any period and book excursions. Stay in Islamorada for fishing priorities and key largo for diving priorities.
It’s hard to be on the water if you don’t have a boat. The beaches suck for the most part.

Watch the sunsets from the beaches of Fort Zachary Taylor! It's a beautiful setting and less crowded than Mallory Square.
The one-hour overview tour of the fort is really well-done and interesting. Check for the times - it may only be given once a day.
The beaches at Bahia Honda state park are some of the best on the Keys! Much better than those on Key West but not a far drive.
Finally, eat at Blue Heaven.
Enjoy your trip! We had a wonderful family vacation there a few years ago and hope to return!

Would like a beachfront view
There is no beach.....well, not one worth paying to stay near. Better off staying in Key West Proper.

I love to go to the middle keys around Marathon. For beach and snorkeling Bahia Honda is the spot. Good diving out of Marathon as well. If you want a colorful, walking key then yea Key West is great. If you want affordable, good fresh seafood (I know key west has good food for sure just not always cheapest) then I like the middle keys.

If you are looking to do a dive/snorkeling trip and want a real character for a captain, check out Captain Slate. I think he runs out of Tavernier now, but 20 years ago or so we did a Dry Rocks/Christ of the Abyss dive with him out of his old place up by where US1 first comes on Key Largo. He is a real character and one you will never forget.

Not just the Keys, for essentially anywhere, try TUG2.NET. (It's a timeshare sale/purchase/rental/exchange/etc. board.
You can get some real bargains, and some absolutely "ain't a bargain" posts wanting you to make them rich.
We've rented several times from the board. For Key West, we the spent a week at Hyatt Residence Club, Key West Beach House in March 2014 for $800.

I like to go to key west for two nights to relax/bar hop and listen to live music. I also like a few nights in the islamorada/largo area. Fly to miami and rent car. Also robbys in islamorada is cool hangout.
Look up nick stanczyk if you like to offshore fish. bud n mary's marina.

Damn, out of my league. I would need to split with a few other couples.
