Wife and I are going to make a trip to Europe and the only dates that work are beginning of October. Our number one choice would be Greece-Athens,Mykonos, Santorini. Anyone been during this time? Should we just wait until we can go in earlier months and go to France, Spain or Italy? I’d rather do the trip right than go and not be able to take advantage of everything it has to offer. Hearing things start closing up in Greece towards the end of October.

I was there mid-Sept last year, which was towards the end of high season (which ends last week of Sept / first week October). Agree, things probably start closing up mid / late October.

Visited Santorini and Mykonos -- weather and places were awesome. First day in Santorini I rented a four wheeler to tour the island. My GF wasn't super keen on it, but then said she had a blast and was one of the most fun things of the trip. Mykonos was awesome from a more party perspective, while Santorini was more romantic you could say. We also did a few days in Rapollo, Italy, which was nice.

We did our honeymoon in Athens and Santorini 2nd and 3rd weeks of October. If I was doing Greece again I'd pick early October every time. Weather was great in Athens and the city was less congested. Santorini was perfect. No crowds at all, had resorts almost to ourselves. Some restaurants were closed down but others were so happy to have customers they invited us into their homes. The only thing you miss in October are Americans.

Not to mention it was 1/2 to 1/3 the price.

Second week of October in my experience in Crete, and it was pretty chilly. I wouldn't go back to the islands at that time but maybe one week earlier would make a difference. I'm all for less crowds and cheaper but chilly, cloudy and most of the restaurants closed or in process of closing? No.

Curious what you mean by chilly? Greece doesn’t get that cold all year? Maybe you simply got an unusual cold front? The average temps are something like low 70s mid 60s for October.

It was cloudy most days, really windy every day, and highs in the 60s, so the beach was a no go. Perhaps we were unlucky. I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Athens at that time though.

I will be there next June (God willing) and I have been told that it is likely that I will melt and/or spontaneously combust. October by comparison sounds wonderful.

I can't speak to Greece, but October is a beautiful time to visit Italy. Grape harvest, olive harvest, etc.

I just got back (trip report forthcoming)

Weather wise, it was hot and sunny, but you wont combust. It was actually relatively cool when one considers the breeze.

I think this is the kicker people have to consider. If you want to swim or not, peak season is all that you can do.

This.

We went in May and the Aegean was still in the upper 60’s. We went in but it was not water you’d want to stay in for very long. Don’t know what water temps will be in October but it’s something to consider.
