Friend,
For theater right now I would recommend The Notebook and The Lion King.
What is your budget for hotels? We prefer The Plaza.
NY, like New Orleans, is a great walking city. The majority of that with which you would likely be interested is found in a thin seven mile area from Central Park southward. See the Statue of Liberty after walking around Wall Street and Freedom Tower. Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to Lucali (be prepared for a wait and get there by 3). Take the Staten Island Ferry. Go to church at Trinity, St Patrick’s, St John the Divine. There are so many beautiful churches! Shop in Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, or Bloomingdale’s or along 5th Ave. Head over to Astoria to see some of the most diverse neighborhoods in the world. Spend an hour in Grand Central and marvel at its size and beauty.
If you’re interested in pizza while there, check out TulaneLSU’s Top 100 pizzas in America 2024. If you’re going to go to Una, be sure to go to its website to secure reservations, which open at 8am two weeks before dining date.

Just took my fam in May.
My kids are 23 and 18.
Stayed at the Element by Westin. Breakfast included so that will save ya alot each day.
You have to do the 9-11 museum. We were there for 5 hours and never got bored. (eat at Bills Bar and Burgers-wow)
We did all the touristy things -rode the subway / Statue of Liberty / Yankee game.
We went to the NBC studios for the Today Show. Wife is a huge fan. We repped out Purple and Gold on tv. Hung around the NBC studios and got freebies for a Kelly Clarkson taping. Worth it.

ETA: I live near John's on Bleeker now and it does live up to the hype. It is amazing. No slices, whole pizza's only. Lines are crazy sometimes, but actually moves pretty fast.
We ate there and it was legit. You could tell there are locals that eat there even though it's so popular.
A recommendation for restaurants...
Lots of things take longer than you expect in NYC and getting around takes a while. Don't be too tied down to restaurants and reservations. There are so many good ones there. Instead, maybe just make one or 2 places you really want to eat and the rest of the time just google something in your area when it's time to eat. You'll find something with great reviews and not be so tied to a schedule that may not work out the way you think it will.

We are going in a few weeks. My daughter lives there and she wants us to go see The Great Gatsby. I think it’s one of the newest shows on Broadway and she’s heard it’s really good!

Wicked and Lion King are the plays I would go to with a family. If you go in December, add Rockettes to the list. We usually stay in a Hampton Inn or Hilton Garden Inn around Times Sq. Carmine's Times Sq for lunch or dinner.
