We are looking to take the family camping This summer. The kids have never really camped before, so I want the whole experience. Cabin, fire, marshmallows and hiking.

What would the board recommend? Any past experiences y’all can share?

We are open to anywhere in the South East. Live in Lafayette and can go as far north as Tennessee.

It's a really long drive but Mentone, AL area is worth checking out especially Desoto State Park

If you want the whole experience, get rid of the cabin and stay in a tent.

Don’t call it camping when you’re not camping.

shite man, if I could convince my wife to do a tent, I would.

I’d like to get a cabin and also bring tents for me and the kids. Everyone wins.

Hold strong on the iphones and ipads. Once you get wherever you go, lock them in the car and don't give in.

For the first, trial run, I'd recommend the cabins at Chicot State Park in Ville Platte.

The kids will have a blast simply running and playing in the woods, etc.
They're kinda on the luxury end compared to tent camping, so the wifey will be pleased.

I’ve never been. Isn’t it super touristy?

Blue Ridge, GA area. Plenty of cabins to rent and close proximity to trails to hike. Since this is not a huge tourist destination except for Atlanta folks, you will find that some things might closed for winter.

Does not compute. Staying in a cabin is not camping.

I was thinking of that! We go there 3-4 times/year. Plenty of Cabin Options.

Couple of cabins we stayed in:

Really liked this one!

Go to our favorite restaurant: Toccoa River Restaurant.

Tubing on the Toccoa is one the great joys. Several companies. We've done them all.

Our favorite!

The town has several nice restaurants and pub kind of places.

Take the kids of the Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad.

Drive over 45 minutes and see:

Amicalola Falls State Park!

Keep going on over to Dahlonega! Cool little town.

If you stay in Mentone and go to Desoto then Cloudland Canyon in Georgia is close as well and very nice!

This. But I don't even allow them in the car. Leave that crap at home.

Lots of good stuff in Arkansas. Some of the state parks have cabins or lodges. Lake DeGray, queen Willamena (sp?), Lake ouchita off the top of my head. I'm sure there are others. I went climbing in at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch once and stayed at a cabin there. Pretty cool place. We were there in the winter just to climb, but it looks like they have a bunch of stuff to do in the summer.

Broken Bow, OK area also has lots of cabin options. Stay in the state park for one that is more rustic, or rent outside the park for more amenities.
