I have an old college chum from Chicago who's in the process of ending a marriage. The topic of moving to a different locale/change of scenery came up and I suggested the NW Florida panhandle. He was receptive but needs to narrow it down. He doesn't want the regular hotspots like Destin, Seaside, Rosemary Beach, etc. Instead, he wants to slow it down and find something a little more "eclectic" and also a good fit for his budget. Trying to find a diamond in the rough, so to speak.

I was coming back from the Apalachicola area a couple of months ago (Apalachicola itself is a really cool little town) and drove through the Port St. Joe area. The water was gorgeous and it looks like a throwback to the '70s. Very low key. The 30-A would work if it's a little off the beaten path. Any suggestions? T.I.A.

You're barking up the right area with Port St. Joe. Other "towns' in that area would be St. George Island or Carrabelle Beach area. Apalachicola isn't bad if he needs something larger where he can work.

I get the change of scenery thing but that is a YUUUUUGE difference from Chicago.

I'm curious what it is about the region that caused you to suggest it to him.

A buddy of mine recently moved to Pensacola, his wife is from there and convinced him to move there. I was rather not impressed.

We'd move to the Florida Panhandle in a heartbeat. But there's that whole job thing for us...

SGI is where I stayed when I drove through Apalachicola. It's way cool. I was fully expecting to see Jimmy Buffet walk across the street. SGI beaches are pretty good but water is Biloxi-ish. I'll have to check out Carrabelle Beach.

perhaps MILTON ? top of Pensacola bay in the pine trees, but only 20-30 min. to the beaches.

Yeah, if that was me I'd be there yesterday.

I like Gulf Breeze. Close to Pensacola, good access to both bay and Gulf fishing, and close to the beach. And easy access to the national seashore if you don't want a "crowded" beach.

Appalachacola would be good too.

If he leaving Chicago to go to Florida, he will be getting a nice tax break.

I don't know if I'd live in Pensacola "proper" either unless I had the coin to live on Bayou Texar, along the waterfront by the country club, or on the water west of the NAS. There are also some old houses close to downtown that you can fix up if you are into that.

Other than that I'd probably want to live in the Gulf Breeze area.

OP is on the right track with the Port St Joe thought. There, St George Island, Apalachicola, Mexico Beach, etc is where I'd go. The last real remnants of "Old Florida" in the panhandle.

I see plenty of people talking about Gulf Breeze and that's another good suggestion, that'd be the second place I'd look. It'd be a distant second though.

Navarre Beach is vastly underrated and surprisingly affordable.

Absolutely. I was going to suggest, but I figured if it was meant to be for the OP then they'd find it researching the Gulf Breeze/National Seashore area. Great thing is that there are so many little places in the panhandle (and, bias or not, Baldwin County, AL) area that the OP's friend is going to be just fine no matter what he decides.

Navarre would be ideal for an older person not too concerned about nightlife, etc.

I've since stumble upon this. It looks very nice. He wants to rent. A nice loft apartment or something similar would be ideal. Clueless about rental rates and availability.

He could do much worse than Navarre. Tiny little "town" that borders one side of the national seashore. Great spot that's also very close to Pensacola on one side and 30-A on the other.

I agree. Navarre Beach is nice, but there isn't much to do outside of Juana's and maybe some of the restaurants on 98.

Navarre traffic is horrible, and that's all year round. It's fine for vacation but it's in the middle of Hurlburt AFB and Pensacola. It's great for a more affordable beach vacation but no way I'd consider living there long term.

Pensacola beach is not that bad. Pensacola has some seriously shady parts but the city also has a lot to offer.

As much as I love apalachicola you have to seriously love the outdoors and not want to be close to anything nice to live there. I'm sure you can find some other retirees down there to hang with, but there is nothing else down there.

Hate all you want, now a days things build up for a reason and don't for a reason. There's very little that is 'hidden' anymore.
