Any suggestions for a Fredericksburg trip? I am going this weekend with S/O and we have all the basics planned, wine tour, enchanted rock, going in town to explore. Besides those things does anyone have any suggestions for some not so obvious things to do there?

Ten miles north of town on Highway 87 is Hill Top Cafe. Worth the drive.

im not sure what your wine tour entails, but take a pro tip: go to heb and get a baguette or similar bread, sliced deli meats, variety of cheeses and jar'd hors d ervs (olives, pickles and such) and have a picnic lunch at the winery. throw in some chips, summer sausage, chocolate bars if you want.

also throw in a few bottles of water.

The National museum of the Pacific War in town is one of the best museums I have been to. It is in the house Nimitz grew up in.

Any of the German restaurants right in town are very good!

First, I recommend reading about the German Freethinkers who settled most of the hill country towns including Fredericksburg. It will help you appreciate the architecture and general culture of these towns.

Drive the Willow City Loop LINK

quote:

This is THE iconic Texas Hill Country scenic drive! The narrow two-lane Ranch Road winds for 13 miles through some of the oldest and most unique geology in central Texas. Deep Canyons carved by Coal Creek are picturesque and the meadows at the bottom offer up splashes of blue, yellow, orange, and white depending on the seaon and which wildflowers are blooming down below. The views from the highest hill tops are absolutely stunning.

Old Tunnel State Park if you want to see some bats
quote:

The abandoned railroad tunnel that gives Old Tunnel its name is home to up to 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasilienses mexicana) and 3,000 cave myotis (Myotis velifer) bats from May through October. During those months, visitors come to watch the bats emerge from the tunnel nightly. Bat-viewing opportunities are available seven nights a week, and nightly educational presentations are given Thursday through Sunday. Call (866) 978-2287 to get the latest emergence time information. There is no phone at Old Tunnel. If you need to contact us, e-mail Old.Tunnel@tpwd.texas.gov.

For an "off the beaten path" wine tasting room, go to Sister Creek Vineyards in Sisterdale. The Sisterdale saloon is cool too. The drive to Sisterdale and on to Kendalia and Spring Branch (towards Blanco) is pretty nice too. Nothing super dramatic but a nice curvy 2 lane road with hardly any traffic. Rough Diamond Brewery in Spring Branch is a super small place making really good IPAs.

From Sisterdale, you are almost to Boerne which is a nice town and Cibilo Creek Brewing Co. is a great spot with good beer and farm to table food. Dodging Duck Brewhaus is another good place. Cibilo Creek flows through town and has a city park with a nice 30 minute hike along the creek through big cypress trees.

Hit up the Garrison Bros. distillery, it's in Hye to the east of town in the middle of wine country.

Go early to Enchanted Rock. Like, first thing in the morning when they open. We go there real early and still had to wait in traffic to get in and park, from the top of the rock we could see traffic backed up for hundreds of cars trying to get in. It's cool though and worth the stop if you beat the crowds.

Go to Luckenbach (13 miles from Fredricksburg), have a beer and a pulled pork sandwich, listen to some music and have another beer.

Go into the top of E rock and belly crawl the cave passages. Pretty damn awesome. You come out on the back face and you can really get sone good exposure...plenty of chimney cragging down to other levels. You'll get your blood flowing.

Husband and I recently did part of a babymoon there. One thing we wanted to do but missed was a cooking class (only offered Friday or Saturday nights) at Das Peach House. It is about 10 minutes from the hotels and Main Street where you are probably staying. We definitely plan to go back (not pregnant so I can drink some wine!) and that is one thing I hope we can do next time.
