Flying into Porto Portufal tips

I'm going to Portugal to hike the Camino Portuguese next year. Either May or September. I've never been oversees just to Mexico and Canada. Drove to those.
Just to make sure I've got everything covered how easy is getting through customs for a American in Portugal. I have a passport, is there anything else I need. I looked on the State Department website and it sounds straightforward. Some reason I'm a little apprehensive about going to a country that I can't speak the language.
Also any tips on flights from New Orleans. I was thinking fly to New York and there are direct flights from there to Porto. I would spend a night in New York on way back. Most options from MSY were multiple stops.

It's easy. You stand in line, show your passport and they ask you questions like how long are you staying in Portugal. The agents all speak english as do most portugese people under 60 years old. Portugal is fantastic, have fun!

Travel to and through Portugal is no different than the rest of the EU. Airports are bilingual. Customs and Immigration are a simple walkthrough. English is the main foreign language taught in school there and the people are exceptionally pleasant.
Flying out can be a little different. Many airports do not announce the departure gate until close to boarding. You'll get a lot of shopping time in duty free.
Flight wise, out of MSY it will be very hard to avoid Atlanta, Dallas or Houston. Your NY plan sounds OK.

I'd love to go someday. You can go through JFK, EWR, Dulles, BOS, ORD, or MIA and get to Lisbon. I know Houston has been trying to get a Lisbon flight through UA or TP for a while.

You can fly Jetblue direct to NY and then book your Portugal flight with a different airline. JB's prices are usually pretty good so it may end up saving you money and a connection.

Always check whatever the stupid COVID policies are if there are any left. I haven't looked at Portugal but most are gone.
Otherwise, most people speak English. Everyone at customs will.
Learn a few key phrases and you will be fine.
The one I find that Europeans love is:
"Hello, I apologize, my (Portuguese) is very poor, do you speak English?"
Enjoy yourself.

I've got enough Southwest points to get anywhere in the USA. I wouldn't mind a over ight stop in NYC either and figured it would be a good point to head east from.

I've looked into the NY stop on the way to Portugal.
It's about the same price-wise as a round trip out of Nola, however with your points and the direct flight out of NYC it may be the way to go. Especially if you don't have a tight schedule and don't mind burning a day in NYC.

We flew TAP out of Miami direct to Lisbon. Fantastic place to visit Portugal. Almost everyone speaks English and they are happy to see Americans and share their cultural history.
