First Christmas alone... want to take a trip... ideas?

This is the first Christmas that both of my parents are gone and I've spent the last 5 years taking care of them. I have no siblings, wife, or children and don't really care for the relatives.
I want to take a solo trip somewhere sightseeing and start my own holiday traditions. I do want to make sure I'm back in time for whatever bowl LSU goes to.
Suggestions??

Sorry about your folks.
You cannot go wrong with NYC for the holidays! Lots of sights to see and lots of fun to be had.

Kudos to you for taking care of the parents, and I hope your holidays are a start of a new tradition for you.
How about San Francisco? Fly there and drive south to Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur. Amazing sunsets, views, and a powerful landscape. If you’re in the mood for something spiritual, you can stay at the New Camaldoli Hermitage, which offers simple lodgings in a silent retreat setting overlooking the Pacific: LINK
Or fly into San Jose, go stay at the Ritz Carlton at Half Moon Bay and play Pebble Beach.

for truly bring there for your parents, I hope I’m able to do the same for them (without strangling them because they are getting old and very grumpy).
If you’re staying in the US, I hit:
-NYC
-Nashville
-Aspen and Vail
If Canada, I’d go see:
-Banff
-Whistler
If Mexico, go stay a few days in:
-San Miguel de Allende

You are a good person to have taken care of your parents like that. Hope my kids will be as kind as you were one day.
Now..
Agree, the world's your oyster, so we'd need to know more about how much time you have, budget, you want to stay in North America? Anywhere?
Hmmmmm..
Single. Male. Free to travel...
Well, beyond the obvious thoughts, and if you want to try a new tradition, go to Europe.
There is NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, that compares to certain European cities during the Christmas season. The festive spirit. The food. The drink. Magical.
A big part of that is the Christmas Markets that start to pop up in late November/early December. OMG. They're so beautiful and amazing. I'd suggest Prague (Czech Republic) or Austria (Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna).
"Best Christmas Markets"
More "Best Christmas Markets"!
Plan B: Vancouver and go drive over to Whistler.
Plan C: There's always the Caribbean (I personally liked Grenada best), but that's a whole other thread. And everybody heads south in the winter and it'd be pricey and crowded.
Keep us posted!!

I'm loving the ideas so far!!
Budget... I don't want to be cheap, but not extravagant either. Under $4000 might be a good number.
I'm going to be in Chicago from Dec 5-9 for the national softball coaches convention so I'll already deal with cold...
A trip to Australia is on my bucket list... maybe a week or 10 days. Might be too close to Christmas to book flights for reasonable rates.
If I do stay in North America, New York City or Jackson Hole are two cold spots I could go to.

NYC is indeed charming at the holidays...I’m gonna add London to the list. History, interesting architecture, plenty of pubs to keep you warm, no language barrier so you can have a good chat with the locals, bustling no matter the weather or season.
—go to a holiday service or concert at your pick of interesting historic churches (St Paul’s always has a lovely choir)
—ride the Thames boat buses down to Greenwich & enjoy the Observatory and the Maritime museums and the ol’ Cutty Sark tea clipper
—buy yourself something stellar, like a new suit or handmade pair of shoes on Jermyn St
—eat your fill of Indian food on Brick Lane
—go see Hamilton in decent seats for 75 pounds (can’t do that in NYC)...or the Book of Mormon, or the Cursed Child, or whatever theater floats your boat
This is the total opposite of my earlier suggestion (coastal Cali), but if you like the thought of NYC at the holidays, you’ll like London.

I am going to be alone for the holidays this year as well. Only did this once before and took backpacking trip. This year I think I am going to volunteer at a local shelter or some other organization and do a few days hiking and sightseeing.

Well, it depends on how far can you go, New York is fascinating in Chrismas time.
This year I have a solo trip to Lviv, Ukraine. It is a very beautiful Christmas atmosphere here. Also I've booked really great Premier hotel here, it's so lovely everywhere. You must see Christmas with slavic traditions it is awesome.

Holiday trips to see National Parks would be the start of a theme.
The farther south you go, the more hours of sunlight and that might be in order this year, just to break with what you've been used to.
The Everglades National Park and then the Marine Sanctuaries near Key West. Center yourself in Miami for ethnic differences. Wolfies for Breakfast. Joe's Stone Crab.

Christmas in Cartagena, Colombia.
You won't regret it.

These are good ones. I'll add Ecuador. And the Colombia suggestion is good too. Somewhere that really gets you away from it all.
