Did Watertown to Twin Lakes in 2017(185 miles). Next week starting in Twin Lakes and hiking to Durango(300 miles). Got about 3 weeks so will need to average close to 18 miles a day. Starting at higher altitude will be tough but I’ll start slow. By week two hope to hitting 20+ miles per day.

How’s the fire season going. That’s one of my concerns. 2017 had some fires west that put so much smoke at Breckinridge visibility was bad.

Got my TD hat so will be representing

I live in Twin Lakes.

Fire season has been pretty good on the east slope but it's dry as hell as you go west. If you're in town Saturday or Tuesday, stop by the Visitors center and give me a Geaux Tigers.

You got any pics or recommendations from the first half of the trail? I had never heard of this one, it looks pretty interesting.

Starts on the outskirts of Denver. Which is nice only 5500'. The hiking isn't that tough. You hit 11,000' before Breck but slowly get to that point.

100 miles to Breck would be a great hike in itself. That was my first longer hike. I had done a few 50 milers but this would be a great thing to do if you are wanting to try a longer thru hike.

I met so many people on the trail you are never really alone.

Also early September is a great time. The elk start bugling and make for really nice early morning ambiance.

I’d be interested in your gear list and pack weight/etc. good luck that’s a major accomplishment

My pack weight is around 11lbs.
Hammock
Tarp
20 degree underquilt
most likely bringing my 40 degree top quilt.
ULA ohm pack
Torso size sit pad/foot pad in hammock

Down vest
Arm warmers/sleeves
Beenie, buff, gloves, one extra pair socks
I go stoveless most of the time. Just easier. I want to setup camp and sleep not wait for food to rehydrate. I eat while walking.

I'm not a super ultra lighter but light enough. Still bring a few items for comfort. I do carry an Inreach.

I’ll be interested to see how fire season goes. We were doing great last year until the very end of July. And we’re getting more rain than last year, so I’m feeling fairly good about wildfires in Colorado.

Seems like most of the fires are out west, which of course gives us a lot of smoke. So far we’ve only had sporadic bursts of periods with bad smoke, but I’ll be interested to see how it goes from here.

I've only had the Sylvan fire near Eagle send that much smoke in, but it stayed mostly up around Leadville. Obviously was hazy until the rains yesterday and today.

At this rate, we should avoid critical fire risk days into August. It's green as hell for mid July around here.

About paradise.

Believe me, I'm thinking about how feasible it would be to get an old Land Cruiser or something and just do tours for small groups and families. You know, just live here full time for the rest of my days.

Is Safeway the best grocery store in Leadville for food supply?

I’m got to supply from there for the first 4 days of hiking.

Yes. Well and only real grocery in town.

They'll have most everything you need. You can also check out Saturday's just out of Leadville to the south. They have some additional stuff geared toward doing outdoor shite.

You can also mail supplies to the Twin Lakes General Store if you just want to pick up there. Send it to your name, note it's for a thru hiker on the box, and pick it up when you get in to start.

CDT hikers do it all the time.

Made it to Salida. 35 miles on the Collegiate west route then hitched down to the eastern route after elevation was kicking my tail. So about 85 miles and 20k’ elevation gain and loss in six days. Maybe taking a day off tomorrow.

I made it to Silverton Co. 240 miles but didn’t have enough time to make Durango. I needed two more days of hiking to finish. The really high elevations with rain 13 of 15 days hiking was a killer.

Still managed about 15 miles per day and had a great time. Saw unbelievable mountains and views. I’ll get some pics up when I get back to home WiFi.

Also I sleep in a hammock and only had one night with no trees.

The weather fricked you.

I've been happy for all the rain but not ideal on the trail. Look forward to your pictures, been talking to Colorado Trail hikers a lot the past couple of weeks.

I had a few days where everyone was stopping early to cross a pass the next day. Lightning storm at 12k’ is an insane experience. Luckily when I crossed the 35 mile all above tree line section we had good weather. Or at least not thunderstorms.
