First off, I know, American sucks.

Had a flight cancelled this past Friday and I requested a refund. Of course the agent on the phone couldn't tell me what the refund amount would be since I had already taken the outbound flight, but said it would be less than half. Anyone have any experience getting a refund from American after taking the flight to your destination but cancelling the flight home, and if so how much did you get back?

The facts.
3/9/25 MLU>DFW>ASE. Made these flights
3/14/25 ASE>DFW cancelled by the airline due to weather. Next available flight not until 3 days later on 3/17/25. Talking with an agent online I found a flight from DEN>DFW>MLU on 3/16/25 so I book it. I then find a flight on 3/15/25 on delta DEN>DFW>MLU so I cancel my American flight within 30 minutes of me booking it and request a refund. Will American use the fact that I rebooked out of Denver against me when it comes to the refund? When checking my refund status online it only shows that I'm being refunded for my flight to DFW and does not mention MLU. Of course the agents on the phone are of zero help.

Each leg of your trip has it's on value. It is very possible your outbound was of more value than your return which is why there is a smaller refund projection.

Your booking from DEN is a separate record locator and will have no impact on your refund for your ASE-DFW-MUL itinerary.

Time on refund depends on if it is being issued in trip credit (24 hours) or original payment form (~7-30 days),

I would suggest using X or the in app (AA App) chat feature. Regardless, you likely don't have to do anything - it is usually automated.

Had them cancel our connection flight back from our honeymoon a few years ago from Charlotte to Atlanta because of weather in Philadelphia. Called it an Act of God and did not get a dollar back from the flight

Last year had them cancel first leg from KC to DFW on trip to Barcelona. Had to find our own way there so took southwest to dfw. Was shocked I had to file for a refund. Finally got it. Also had travel insurance which helped with delays etc. highly suggest getting a yearly plan through Allianz. Also isn’t there a law now that airlines have to refund if cancelled

delays

Any flight, US carrier or otherwise, that lands or takes off from the EU, is covered by the EU law that is essentially a passenger bill of rights. Delayed bag, and you need to buy a $600 suit for a meeting? United paid me less than ten days after I sent the receipt in.

Travel insurance is almost never actually needed on major carriers in most airports. The exception may be if you do something dumb like schedule a 40 minute connection on an international flight, but I consider that a stupid tax you need to own up to in order to save yourself $36 a ticket.

I’ve wondered why airlines offer flights with impossible connections.

People would bitch if those flights were hidden and cost $30 less. It seems to be blocked (United, *A) where there is never a flight with under about 40m. Unfortunately, that's when international flights start boarding. And if you're in a shithole like ATL, that means you're taking the train across at least two concourses. Inbound, they have no way of knowing whether the TSA Pre Check line is open or not, so even two hours at SFO maybe sometimes won't be enough.

On the plus side, United, Turkish and Lufthansa have always booked me on multiple connecting flights if my transatlantic flight is delayed where it creates a risk. This happens either in the air hours before I land, or before boarding the original flight.

That said, what's possible for someone like me that trucks it, and knows where to go, passport ready, and the typical fumbling f@*$& idiots that have no idea where they even are, are different.

I canceled a Delta flight to Turks and Caicos recently because the connection time was 45 minutes. I opted for an American flight connecting in DFW with an hour and 45 minute connection time. The original leg of my AA flight got delayed by an hour. We were still going to make it until the pilot aborted the landing. We didn’t get to Turks until the next day. The Delta flight landed in ATL early and got to Turks on time. American offered us passes to their lounge which I already had. They also gave us a hotel voucher. That’s was it. We had to eat the missed night at the Turks hotel. Flying is a crowded crap shoot these days.
