That is a political stunt. They were bitching when we did that to them in February or whenever it was.

This slight — “a stinging blow to American prestige in the world and a repudiation of President Trump’s handling of the virus in the United States,” as the Times put it — not only underscores how much worse the U.S. outbreak has gotten in recent days. It also highlights how much better the EU is currently doing than the U.S.
I legitimately hate politics and all media now.

That's 100% playing politics. They all can read the data and know we are testing more than every nation of the world combined. Positive cases does not mean a damn thing.

The think they’re just going to have to open the borders and deal with the consequences.
The economic costs of closure are just so crippling.

Anyone think this is all just political posturing and things will open up?
Really hoping to go to Iceland in Sept.
They're testing people at the airport there already. Seems dumb that they would deny all the American tourism dollars when they're testing people to get in anyway.

Agreed. Although it’s easy to blame politics for this decision, the world revolves around money. US tourists spend money. Once Americans feel comfortable and allowed to travel back to US, borders will be open.

The European airlines certainly need the traffic.
I was reading about the cost cutting measures on KLM earlier today. Flying with then right now sounds awful.

Exactly. The EU doesn’t want to admit it but they need Americans now, not later. They’ve got Europeans so scared of covid that even with economies opening Euros aren’t traveling at all. Go to a hotel and they’re down 90% year over year. We went to the Van Gogh museum last weekend and might have been one of a dozen people inside. Amsteram in June and you pretty much have the city to yourself.

Ok, not to hijack my own thread, but I gotta know. Are you living over there and got to travel around? How'd you get to go? What's it like right now? How are people reacting to all of this? Having some tourist etc.?
Couped up in this house and need to live some vicariously!!

I’m not there - but from talking to my family, in France you couldn’t go anywhere for a long time. Movement controls. No public transport.
The small silver lining for them, they were building a house, and the contractor ended up dedicating all their time to the project, because it was the one place I they could get to without running afoul of a police checkpoint.
I haven’t asked what it’s like in Paris, but I can if you like.

Yeah I live in Europe. Every country reacted a little differently. Netherlands and Switzerland were fairly even-handed and never really closed hotels and restaurants. places like France went full on authoritarian. Late May things started opening up a bit across Europe. In our country restaurants started opening the last week of May along with borders for travel in early June.
Europeans aren’t really vacationing yet because the news /governments have them all riled up about covid. And since Americans can’t come here all the tourist destinations are ghost towns. It’s awesome if you’re already here though and aren’t a giant pussy. Great deals and no crowds. For example, Airbnb’s just started opening up in Paris again and you’re seeing prices discounted 60% or more. We’re doing all-inclusive Mallorca next week for 700 a person.
When we were in Amsterdam no one really gave a shite about masks or social distance, they were just happy to have someone there spending money. Hotel owner came by our room to thank us for being there. Same with Belgium. I was in Trier Germany for lunch this afternoon and on the main drag people were shoulder to shoulder, no masks. You’d never know anything happened - which is a very sharp contrast from Munich, London, or Paris where they love their big government.
Haven’t been to Spain since lockdown and am anxious to see how people on the ground feel there. But I’ll probably stop giving a shite the minute I’m on crowd-less Mediterranean beach in early July

Forcing you to drive through the Alps to get to northern Italy instead almost seems like an inadvertent favor.

How's Mallorca? I've heard great things. Thinking of making my 2021 Europe trip there after my 2 2020 Europe trips have been COVID cancelled. Probably going to go all out on the 2021 trip in celebration of turning 30

What's the word in the UK, London and Edinburgh in particular. Have an upcoming trip planned for April 2021.

pro tip: do not buy bottled water from any gypsy families in strassbourg.
i was visiting for a weekend (i used to live in tuebingen, germany) and after a long day of hiking and sightseeing foolishly bought a bottle of water from these random gypsies. should have known something was up because the seal was slightly broken/off. i haven't been so sick in my life. lesson learned. now i make it my life's work to caution travelers about the dangers of gypsy water.
