Paris/London/Rome have a ton of old world stuff to see and do though. Madrid mostly does not.
Madrid DOES have two of the best museums in the world, if you're in to that. They are really great museums. And some amazing restaurants, and the Palace is very cool.
That should occupy you for a couple of days.
Also perhaps the oldest restaurant in the world, as I recall. Kids might enjoy that.

Let me add though, if you are doing Spain:
My wife's favorite city on Earth is Sevilla. She fricking LOVES it. The Gothic cathedral is amazing, and the rooftop tour of it is amazing. The tapas is cool, and it is just a super down to earth place. The bull fight ring is cool to see (am NOT interested in an actual bullfight, personally).
I love Barcelona, its top 5 for me. The Old Quarter is pretty neat. It has a beach, and all kinds of stuff to see. And some of the best restaurants on earth.
Never made it to Granada/Alhambra, wish we had. We did do the cathedral in Cordoba which was an incredible sight.

Barcelona does look incredible.
So many places I want to go, but so little time with school and work schedules!

We just got back from a cruise from Barcelona to Rome. I'd definitely go back to Barcelona to spend more time, then take train along coast through France and Italy. The Italian coast along Cinque Terre is amazing. My 11 year old really enjoyed it.

Why so many places? Granted a whole month makes it much more palatable.
My kids are great travelers, which makes it easier. Question is, are they naturally great travelers or are they this way because we travel so often?
But for our trip, it's really only four countries in four week. My father in law is from Belfast, so we'll be spending some time in Ireland and N. Ireland. I met my wife while in grad school in London, so we'll show our kids where we met and visit some friends who have kids the same age.
Then onto Portugal and Spain for some touristy stuff with the final week in a resort in Marbella to finish on a more relaxing note.
(our time in Paris is more of a day trip. We have a 14-hour layover in Paris on our way to Dublin, so we'll do a little hop on hop off bus tour or something and then head back to the airport)
Kids are resilient. And the more exposure and experience they have with travel, the better travel partners they become.

My wife and I took our two children on a river cruise on the Danube that started in Budapest and ended in Germany. It was through Tauck. We have since been to Europe several times and this is still all of our favorite. I highly recommend it. Here is a link to the cruise.
