Driving in Yucatan, MX

I've been to the Playa/Tulum area numerous times but I've always gotten an airport transfer and booked tours that pick you up. I'm going next week and have a rental car booked, but everyone I've spoken to who doesn't travel thinks I'm nuts.
We are going to chicken itza, but I'm not planning to drive at night or really go anywhere outside of the tourist areas. Nothing to worry about, right?

You are almost definitely perfectly safe, I wouldn’t worry too much. If shite does happen, it’s not like they are going to cut your head off or hang you from the interstate overpass or unload an ak47 or anything like that they do in Mexico….oh wait you are driving in Mexico?
