Safe to rent a car and drive around this region?

Seems totally fine, but we would get car service if this isn't a good idea. Daytime driving only.

I have friends that live in San Miguel and claim its fine (but, now that I think of it, I haven't heard from them in awhile). Serioously, San Miguel seems to be a big ex-pat haven.

Get a car service, cheap and you can drink beer while they drive. They can direct you to good stuff to see/places to eat and definitely know what areas to avoid.

I got married in San Miguel in 2019, it's not as safe now as it was then.

Doable. Stick to highways. Stop only at large gas stations and stores. You'll be fine.

Biggest worry will be police looking for bribes not gang activity.

That was my biggest concern...the police.

We found a driver with a black car in mexico city for 25 per hour. So far I have only found 50 per hour for a driver in this area. It's still a great rate, but I guess I was spoiled in CDMX with their rates.

All those cities are very safe to be in... its the driving between cities by a gringo that could be dangerous...hire a drive to get between cities....all are beautiful cites with a lot of great colonial architecture, great plazas to take in the Mexican culture and great food. Enjoy your trip!
