Heading up to Detroit Thursday and returning Saturday evening. Taking in a concert Friday night. It looks like we'll have Thursday afternoon/evening free, all day Friday (until around 6) and Saturday morning free to take in the city.

I've never been to Detroit and was wondering if there are any must do's (other than surviving...lol). We're pretty laid back....bars, food, taking in the sites and just all around laid back.

TIA

I visited a few years ago and had a good time. We never felt unsafe. You can really tell how grand it once was in the day. Huge sculptures and dry fountains in front of grand government buildings that are now abandoned and for sale, the infrastructure built for a population that's not there anymore, etc.
We caught a Tigers game. The area around the baseball stadium, football and hockey arena is called Hockey Town. There are alot of sports bars in that area.
Greektown is the casino-party district. Elsewhere in the city we went to Detroit Brewing Co and Atwater Brewing. We ate at a spot called Vinsetta Garage which was cool and had good food.
The Henry Ford Museum is the best museum I've ever been to. It holds Henry Ford and Thomas Edison's personal collections along with historical items like the chair Lincoln was assassinated in and the car Kennedy was assassinated in. Tons of historical automobiles and machines. There's even a pristine 1978 Honda Accord on display.

Really wasn't asking for your approval. Say what you will about his music, but he puts on one helluva show....only sold out 7 nights to open the new arena.

If you like kid Rock then you and I don't like the same things and my recommendations will be worthless to you.

I saw several McDonald's and I think there are Casinos so you'll have a good time.

Look is like the Clemson guy came through with some good recommendations. Have a great time. I am a guy that believes you can have a good time anywhere. Even Detroit.

If I wanted your opinion on what type of music I should like or whether we liked the same things I would have posted on the music or OT boards. Wouldn't it just be easier to stfu and stay out of the thread if you have nothing to add.

I forgot to mention to visit the original Motown records studio that was just a tiny house (now a museum). There's also a riverwalk park along the Detroit River and GMC/Ford Motor Co Headquarters. Downtown Detroit is suprisingly small and walkable. You can definitely walk to most anything in the downtown area if you're staying downtown. Again we never felt unsafe downtown and the locals were great. Everything you hear about is on the fringes of the city and neighboring communities

Thanks for the suggestions. I think the ford museum will be one of our stores as well as the riverfront. Thanks for the suggestions!

You have the mindset of a more current Detroit. Like I said a lot were privately collected by Henry Ford and Thomas Edison and then their foundations.
