Doing an Alaskan cruise next year. Looks like Holland America offers trip insurance for about $600 for the two of us. I’ve also heard a lot of people do private insurance. And some people don’t worry about insurance. What is y’all’s experience?

That is not a bad price.

Try Allianz.
Their pricing is usually less than cruise line pricing.
Also, the coverage is higher.
Aside from cancellation , the biggest risk is medical evacuation. A helicopter ride off the ship is $90k and up. Cruise line insurance limits out at about$20k.
My Allianz policy coverage is $500k for medical.
They also offer annual policies.

So after your post, I did a quick quote with them for just this cruise. $200 total for the 2 of us. With what looks like much higher coverage. Good call on that.

I have two Viking cruises booked.
The Viking insurance was much more than that, almost triple what yours was going to cost. I went on Insure My Trip ,com and got a much better rate. You can easily shop around on there.

Definitely get insurance. Two years ago on a Rhine River cruise my wife had a medical emergency. She spent several days in a German hospital. Her hospital stay, my hotel bills and transportation expense added up to more than 7500 euros. Insurance paid 100%

Travel insurance starts at about 7% and goes to around 12%. You just have to factor in the risk and if you want to self insure or not. If you are paying less than 7% than you need to really look into it as you likely are not getting much at all.

If you are old and probably shouldn’t be traveling, then that’s where it can really start making sense financially.

ETA: travel insurance is great for the specific things it covers. But you have to also understand there are many MANY items that are not covered. It’s rarely just cancel because you need to and get money back. Its a common mistake I hear about

Definitely get insurance. I now carry an annual policy through Allianz, but when I shopped for individual trip coverage, InsureMyTrip was a good resource with comparison tools (though I usually ended up selecting Allianz then too).

I've had one of their annual policies for a few years as I'm spending a few months per year out of the country. They just paid for a tooth that split on a flight overseas. Was lucky to find an emergency dentist next to the airport. Their annual runs me around $750. I mostly have it to cover medical when abroad, and because I have several elderly family members and an unexpected early return flight is a very real possibility. The trips I do can be pretty expensive. It's the only time I've used it in the 3 or 4 years I've had it.

We do as well. Never go through Viking and always use Allianz. Well worth it just in case.

plus and minuses. I stuck with Disney insurance for our cruise because it gives you 75% cost of your cruise back for any reason if you have to cancel. It’s a little more but 3rd party doesnt cover trip cancellation unless you pay even more. I think 3rd party had more medical/evacuation coverage from my research.

Holland’s is way too expensive. I use UHC Safe Trip. You get medical & travel. (Your medical insurance will not work outside of the US nor will it cover emergency repatriation.)

OUCH! If you have good mobility and sense, travel in your 80's is reasonable. But, stay home if you are feeble. If that old do get insurance for repatriation of your corpse. Also get cancellation insurance at any age if buying non-refundable tickets,

Wife needed ER assessment in Ireland. It was excellent care at a reasonable cost. Insurance covered it all, but we could have handled it out of pocket.

Or made sure you have health insurance with emergent world wide coverage. Many things oiffered in travel policies are offered other places at much lower costs.

I purchase $1m in coverage with Geo-blue for me and the wife for a week in Jamaica and it was under $100, I think like $68. Its an arm of Blue Cross Blue Shield. Easy to get online in a matter of minutes.

The coverage seems more than adequate for the price, $68 !
